I'm relatively certain this is Stacy's first solo EP. If it's not, it's very early into his released music forays. That's just trivial information though. What matters is that three of the tracks on this EP jack. I'll usually insist on being more partial to side A, but the first on side B is very tempting on the dance floor. Swing it.

Top Cat "Red Zone EP" Dance Mania 199

I'm obviously still on my Dance Mania theme here. I was merely side tracked for a while with new stuff and sets. I'm back at it and figure I've got 3 more that I should share (as very influential EPs to me) before I move on.

This particular EP holds it's own and will continue to do so for many more years. There isn't a weak track on the EP. It kicks off with 'That's Law' which you'll see right away isn't an easy one to shake from recent memory and keeps trucking right through to the end of side B. Enjoy.

This particular Dance Mania EP was a local hit to say the least. Ollie Barkovic of Steel City records had it with him at all times and the local kids loved it. 'Da Bomb' and 'House-O-Matic' rule where ever and when ever they're played. Fact!

Keeping on the Dance Mania tip of course. I've selected an EP that doesn't seem to get much love. I'll grant you the tracks are simple and formulaic, but I've never grown bored of them. They do what they do and they do it well. If a track can hold it's own and still work a dance-floor 14 years after it was released it's doing something right.

In carrying on with the Dance Mania spotlight, here's a Dj Deeon record (probably only one of a few I'll get to) that was first brought to my attention by Terry Mullan. Indeed Terry was my first exposure to a lot of Acid and Chicago as there weren't too many other guys playing it in Toronto that I knew of at that time. It was always a big deal in the mid 90's when we knew Terry was playing/coming.

Even though there was some time spent on the subject of Dance Mania on Bleep Radio, there are still some people who obviously weren't paying attention!

I'm going to post up a handful of my favorite Dance Mania EP's over the next little bit whenever I can't find anything new. Think of it as another tribute of influences I guess.

When I posted the info up for the 2nd EP in this Classic DM series I predicted Deeon's "House-o-matic" on the 3rd EP. I was wrong. Who knew predicting the future was a fool's game?

This was open to all for about 6+ months and I figured it would have gotten much more attention than it did, but don't think I'm complaining. We still have over 100 minutes of DM to enjoy from 8 different people. As things go I guess it worked out alright. People don't always have the time and all that jazz. Maybe, just maybe, I also over-estimated how many people really know about this label now. Is it unknown amongst the people starting off? I hope not.

Because of a new position at work my schedule will be in flux quite a bit for an unknown period of time. I will no longer be steady days and as such Bleep may not air via Live-Sets at 7pm EST, Thursday nights, as it usually does. Today is the first example of this. Instead of canceling the show for a while I'll just wing it as best as I can and when my schedule falls into something predictable I'll make the schedule request with the Live Sets crew. For those of you who simply grab the archive each week this probably will not affect you. I'll try to keep the show on Thursday for continuity reasons, but it may change.

Contrary to my goal of playing some more older stuff I ended up throwing together fairly recent records again. I've never been that good at planning these things out so maybe I should just stick with how I've always done it... loose and off the cuff.

Remember the Dance Mania mixes should be in by May 31st, 2008.

And as far as Bleep news goes Leon Segka is putting together a mix. Leon is from Greece and is the founder of Ntrop Recordings. He approached me about it and I only had to hear an odler promo mix of his once to know he'd fit right in. It's looking like it'll be a great blend of jackin' minimal, chunky tech house, bleeps, stabs and twisted vox from him. So keep an eye out for that show!

First off...

If you don't know what "Dance Mania" is it's too late for you. You're probably beyond saving. But you should still make an effort to acquaint yourself with the label responsible for so much.

Seeing as how these Ghetto Classics are picking off the best of the Deeon I'm going to make a prediction..House-o-matic on #3.

I've also now --because of these Dance Mania represses-- realized that at one point I was going to do a Dance Mania themed Bleep Radio show. I think I'll see about finding the time to crank that bad boy out this weekend for a show sometime soon. Now that I think of it...if anyone else wants to do a Dance Mania mix (of any length) do it up and send it to me. We can do a mega DM Bleep show.

Or am I dreaming?

It's never too late to repress some gems.

I'd grab this for a fresh copy of Work this M.F.. Mine hasn't played right since day one. Of course that's got something to do with the record's bowl shape.
