Here's a taste of what Paul Birken can do. Recorded at the latest Rizumu Party in Philadelphia.
Paul Birken Live @ Rizumu
Half of the supremely cranked group Subhead is making a debut appearance on Cynthia Stern's label Input-Ouput.
Mark Hawkins at the Tresor Im Exil party in the Maria Am Ufer Club
Not a ton of info on this one. Performed/recorded by "Tec-Ho" of Leicester, England on 19/11/05. This is the second live set of this guy's I've heard and I really like what's he's doing. May not be as poilshed as some of those, but it's definitely heading in the right direct, if not mostly there already.
I've only recently discoverd the chap named Lief. I'm finding myself sorry to have missed his first few release now. I'll have to dig them up if they're anything like this one or the last one he dropped on Growth.
Shed records, the home of many great artists and their work - well ok, not SO many but they're working on it - has a Various Artist Compilation due out pretty damn soon. It looks tight and tasty.
I've gotten word from Mark that he's going to be in North America for about May 2007 (ish). It's time I cracked the whip and helped him get as many gigs as possible while he's here. Finally a chance to see one of his Live-Sets in person. Assuming I can get him a gig close to me!
I believe it's also time to pull Paul Birken out of that comfy place he calls home. it's time for N.A. to taste some proper Techno.

Bio
Mark Hawkins is in the vanguard of the new wave of new wave UK techno. Beginning his career in 1999 with a split EP with Michael Forshaw on the latter's much loved Chan 'n' Mike's label, Hawkins was soon noticed by Saskia Slegers for whom he has now recorded 6 eps on her well known Djax Up Beats imprint. He has also released on, amongst others, Pro-jex, Mosquito and Hörspielmusik.
In 2003 he began his own label, Crime, which is proving to be a credit to his already impressive history. Crime is now up to it’s Fourth release, having already featured Michael Forshaw, Rotorik, and Mark himself along with remixers Si Begg, Bill Youngman and DJ Urban, and has scored much acclaim in reviews and DJ reactions.
Mark has also performed regularly over the past 5 years, both Live and as a DJ in The UK, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Australia.
Now resident in Berlin, Germany, Mark continues to forge his own path on the electronic music scene, experimenting with sound, and soaking up the city’s musical influence.

For the last 20 years, Paul has been developing and exploring his love for the limitless potential that exists when you chain together synths, sequencers, samplers, and drum machines. From those early teen days with his old Commodore 64 computer and a few synths through the present (with an ever-changing studio and gear arsenal), the ability to create grooves and trax that you can get into and get down with has allowed him to branch into the techno/house/electro world. Over the past 8 years, Paul has had the opportunity to put out solo releases and remixes on various electronic labels.
Now his own imprint "Tonewrecker Recordings" is keeping the Midwest strongly on the map with regular releases from producers around the world that feel the same level of passion for techno music in all it's forms. Veto.co.uk is the exclusive distributor currently.
While it's always a challenge and interesting to make trax in the studio for an album or remix, it is a constantly evolving process when creating live pa's. Since he doesn't spin records, Paul's live sets include everything from new trax that you'll never hear on an available release to last minute remixes of his own cuts, or even other artists trax that he wants to include in the 60-90 minute set. On ocassion, when the event allows the right setting, there's been a few 3 hour marathon performances. Each set is unique in that it gets erased after the event and won't be performed again. With over 250 unique performances at various parties and clubs all across the U.S. and overseas. The 100% live, bangin' funk pa's will hopefully show up somewhere near you soon.

Show #18 just ended and here's the dirty, dirty details for you wonkers.
The Continuance of Detroit's Electronic Legacy. SCAN 7 and Posatronixhave joined forces tocreate Cratesavers Muzik. Together with a vision of preservation, they seek to keep the movement of the electronic music culture strong, true, and independent. Move into the future, realize the present & dont forget about the history. How Cratesavers came to be: The idea behind Cratesavers Muzik is the preservation of vinyl records.
Another Kugel Box various artist compilation is out now and I highly recommend it. It reads as a current who's who of the wide world of wonk.
Mutter Tontrager #21 is a split Ep between Rotorik and Tet entitled Phantom Commando. Rotorik's typcial crazy patterns of filtered and effected drums make feet tap!
I discovered three sets today. Two are Neil Landstrumm goodies and the final is a Cannibal Cooking Club beat soup.

Bill Youngman has updated his electrostep site a wee bit. Since the last time I was there there has been some artist bios and other tidbits of info added. It's a bit of a tour to find it you have to explore the site and make with a lot of clicky action. I';s a damn good thing he added a live set of his own or I'd personally never forgive him for the added strain of having to actually look around.
I've included a link to the set directly because it appears Bill is still a novice with the site setup and has managed to bugger up the link. no worries, I did some digging and discovered the URL and basically all the other leg-work. Thank me later.
I don't know which set this is. Could be new, could be old. I'm not bothering with actually checking it before I post because I'm going to bed. Ta-ta.
Enjoy this Daniel Benavente mix recorded at Neue Neimat in Prag October 8th, 2005.
Tresor has put together a compilation entitled "It's Not Over" with some heavy hitter names on it. I haven't listened yet but without a doubt it can't be bad.
Neil Landstrumm and Tobias Schmidt have cooked up another EP of oddball rhythms, spastic acid lines and even some vocals tossed in for good measure (Toby I think). Don't know when exactly the street-date on this one is but according to Neil's site it's estimated to be November.
Ugly Funk Records has a new one out now. Two Aeox tracks on there to rock your socks with some Cut Out to top it off.
