I already knew the rest of the world had caught on ;) let's if we can't Canada caught up for next month though. My home country is lagging far behind...

This is one of the better Ze Migl's lately. Just as much Chi-town as it is hard Techno. I'm kinda starting to yearn for some nice slow bass wonk jams or something though. Too much hard and crazy stuff coming out!

I've got a set to share from a resident Miditonal/Kugelbox artist. It's pretty hard and dirty, but it never goes into dull and boring territory. His tracks on the two labels I already mentioned I don't hear at all in it which is a shame as they're both great.

This video has been floating around on the Internet for some time now. I figured I'd toss it on my server though so that the people who don't like Megaupload and the lies, can grab it too. It's a very large file. Well over 600 megs, so be warned even on my quick little server it could be a bit of a wait.

It wouldn't kill you to check out their site as well. They keep charts and whatnot posted if you're into their brand of mayhem.
Cannibal Cooking Club

Because he's a totally radical dude...Paul gave me a Live Studio set of his to air on Bleep Radio tonight. Radical!

here's the rundown of music and kit used to make it happen...

Music bits:
An hour's worth of cuts and reworks, effects and weird scratches by artists like Frankie Bones, Joey Beltram, Adam Beyer, Andrei Morant, Dj ESP, Tony Rohr, Dj Sneak (oldschool!!), Dj HMC, Nigel Richards, Dj Rush, Christian Morganstern, Mika, Bob Brown, Terry Mullan, Angel Alanis, Dietrich Schoenenman, Dj Urban, and myself (Paul Birken).

Tech bits:
Acid 3.0 (final mixdown was 855 tracks! - unlike Ableton which I use now, each snippet in Acid required it's own track...damn damn)
Tuareg 1.5
Soundforge 5 bunch o' plugs
wavesurgeon 2.56

How it happened bits:
Lots of pieces dumped and loaded on the MPC2000xl like I'd do for a liveset.. cut up, filtered, run off through the patch bay into effects, crossfaded and recorded back in.

mix slows from 138 bpm to 105 bpm and then goes back up to around 135 somewhere in the middle...mostly done as an experiment learning smooth tempo changes in the program.

Machines....shut down...think about it

Tomorrow night I have the pleasure of playing for Xanu Radio's Transmit Rooftop Patio night in Toronto. Below are some pictures of last week's event that they held and a shortened low-quality snippet of the CD I made to bring with me to pass around.

Teaser Set Download (Contains: Klanget D, Paul Birken, TSR, Landstrumm, Youngman, Art of Noise and more)

If you do live close by and come in. Tomorrow will be a fun mix of everything. The teaser set is HARD, but I'll have 2 bags of records with me so expect the whole range. For those of you who don't live close by...check out the Transmit info page. It's all streaming Live on their Internet Radio station. Tune in!

So I dug up some old CD archives. I wasn't looking for them, but stumbed across them while straightening up a little. The first mix I'm going to post, is I think, it's first time being available for download. I may have hosted it for a short time immediately after the party, but I don't think so.

This is a guest mix from the Monthly Techno events I used to do in Toronto (with my partner at the time Stewart Douglas). Our night was called "We Don't Suck" It was a name that was hated by some and loved by others. We thought it showed we were out to have fun which is exactly what we were out to do.

This set was recorded at "We Don't Suck" #6 which took place August 20th, 2004. It was the set played by our guest that month: Sebastian Prelar. Seb has releases on several labels, but people seem to know him from his Djax stuff. Anyway, Seb is from Montreal and him and 2-3 of his buddies drove into Toronto to play for us. It was tons of fun and one of the top 3 most successful "We Don't Suck" parties. Everyone was shakin their ass!

This is the same sort of deal as the Mental Ind. mixtape that Beni gave me to host online 2 days ago. Null Records is a dope ass label. One of my favorites -- not that anyone was wondering. The reason it's my favorite is Aeox. Null lead to me discovering Aeox. Good enough reason if I ever heard one because as far as I'm concerned Aeox = fantastic.

Everyone's favorite basher Michael Forshaw and his partner in crime Dan Monox are The Flying Lurinskys...

whilst serving lengthy jail sentences for crimes against fashion, Dan Monox and Michael Forshaw first met during a riot where they both tried to escape.
they were quickly caught and thrown into solitary confinement in cells across from each other.
no record exists of which fashion crimes were committed to warrant such harsh custodial sentences, and the boys are staying tightlipped about it.
kept in solitary for 6 months, many conversations ensued revealing a love of evil techno and circus trapeze acts.
both were surprised to discover that as children they'd been taken to see the same amazing circus show.
the act that remained indelibly stamped on their memories was that of a family of trapeze artistes called 'the flying lurinskys'.
Dan and Michael were both blown away by the sheer audacity and bravery of this daredevil ariel troupe, and were deeply saddened to find out that 'the flying lurinskys' were all tragically killed last year while trying to incorporate a grizzly bear into the act.
circus insiders still maintain that the family might have been saved if the bear had been declawed before training began
but anyway... Dan and Michael decided to preserve their memory by taking 'the flying lurinskys' name for themselves, making every track an homage to this death defying family.

TET
1) Free MP3s are usually a "thanks to the fans", so as a big thanks to everybody who supported TET - Travailleur En Trance in their mission so far, two free full-length MP3s have been uploaded to TET-ZENTRUM!
Get to the "audio" section now and download:
- "The Vortex" - an unreleased track from "Ultima Ratio Intervention" recording sessions
- "Sector Champion" - a vinyl only track from sold-out Acido 002 EP, performed by "rotorik vs. TET"

2) Yet another TET interview is online. It was recently conducted by Germany's Godfather of Goth, Ecki Stieg, for his site Grenzwellen.com. Risking his neck as usual, CS even ventures into criticising other "current EBM" bands even more harshly than usual - this certainly provides for excellent gossip stuff... ;-) More interviews can be found in the "reaction" section of TET-ZENTRUM.

3) TET's famous debut CD "Ultima Ratio Intervention" has also been licensed to Grenzwellen.com for MP3 distribution. This way you can get the whole album or separate tracks.
Of course you can also still order some remaining copies of the album uncompressed from manoeuvre records!

4) You are already well-informed you about TET's very special show at Front 242's 25-year-celebration in March, and watched the video available for free download at least a dozen times. But you probably didn't know that another EBM legend was present incognito among the audience: Tommi Stumpff! Insiders are aware of the fact that he (and not DAF) was always the most daring EBM act from Düsseldorf. And just like the Belgian hosts he actually came to see perform, he was convinced by the style and power of TET! Stumpff- who recorded his first releases with legendary Conny Plank back in 1982 - was so excited he even took the time to write a little review. You can now find it in the "reaction" section of TET-ZENTRUM! The enthusiasm is definitely quite remarkable for a grumpy old cynic like him... ;-)

Rotorik

1) Incredible: The new rotorik release "rotorik live at the rotodrôme" on Acido 004 is finally available!
Go grab it at your local shop though distribution by Possible Music Berlin or Hardwax!

About this release:
"rotorik live at the rotodrôme" might surprise those who've been following the work of rotorik since his debut release in the year 2000, but perhaps never managed to catch him on one of his live shows. While the studio releases were usually produced in a rather complex way, CS went much more raw and minimal when playing live. Using his own unique virtual modular instruments, rotorik was able to adapt to any crowd and venue. The result were always quite different sets, depending on if he played in techno temples such as Stammheim or Neue Heimat or in more laptop electronica oriented places such as the Golden Pudel Klub or WMF.
This release holds a selection of recordings made in rotorik's studio "the rotodrôme", specificly made to show the wide range of styles possible. While tracks like "Danger Phreak", "Traekker II" and "Renovator" remotely demonstrate what you would expect from rotorik (approximately hard, abstract weird techno), "Global Positioning", "Drohor" and "Index Funk" are samples of fine, mesmerizing electronica stuff. And the beatless "Verschollen in der Unendlichkeit" proves rotorik can even make you float away into space!

2) rotorik's debut 12" "Votum EP" (recorded & released as "rotor" on Hidden Rooms/Otaku in 2001) - which like most older releases has long been sold out - has been licensed for MP3 distribution and is now available at iTunes (needs iTunes installed) or Beatport (needs Flash). Take this chance to check out to the very beginnings of rotorik!

I finally got all the info for the other Mark Hawkins record I mentioned 2-3 weeks ago.

Kitty Corner is a new label managed and run by Axel Sohns of Germany. I'm not entirely sure of his intentions regarding future releases, but starting off with Mark at the helm at least points him in a good direction. Axel's name might sound familiar to some and that would be because he has a track on the next Tonewrecker EP which I mentioned a few weeks back as well.

I have more, but really I think there ones all stand on their own as track that have influenced a lot of people. The rest are just videos to watch. Do some searching of your own or if you have a video that you think was/is very influential for house/techno jocks then post it in the comments.

The set-up...

So back in May I found out that Neil Landstrumm was booked to play at the Detroit Music Fest. I was stoked. There is currently a bit of a dry spell where I live with regards to Techno coming in that I personally enjoy. So I knew I was finally going to get to hear some good tunes with only moderate amounts of traveling. Excellent.

The plan..

The next day I went to work and told them I wanted a week off for the Festival. I gathered up my tiny little crew of misfits, booked my hotel rooms, bought my tickets, and asked Neil about meeting up with him. Excellent.

The arrival...

After a 4.5 hour drive to Detroit we finally made it to the Hotel. And found out we had to wait for a room to be cleaned. 1.5 hours later we had nothing yet. So we stowed our bags in the car and started walking down to the festival where we could at least spend our wait listening to music. I think I made it about 2 blocks when Neil called to let me know I could pop on over for our visit in an hour or so. Excellent.

The beginning...
So we show up at the Festival and walk around. We knew full well we probably would be hard-pressed to find anything we liked, but we were killing time. I aven't been to the festival in years for a reason...About 15 minutes before we were supposed to walk over to Neil's Hotel I spotted him sitting at the Seismic booth so we went and harassed him there until he was all set to go. Excellent.

The conversation...
is audio, so listen to it!

(dis)claimer:
I call this a conversation because really that's what it is. I didn't sit down with a pre-planned series of questions as that's boring and not how I do things. Instead I went in knowing that I was going to have an oppurtunity to talk with someone who likes the same music as me, but with a little more longevity on his side. So some of this audio file is idle banter, but there is info about what Neil thinks is happening to the "scene", the tracks he has set aside for a new Album and other stuff of note. Enjoy it. There should be more soon. I wont take as long to put it online next. I Promise. Excellent.

Scandinavia NYC [ Neil's web portal with mini-sites for all of his endeavours ]

Yes y'all! Body-rock y'all!

I know this is only going to remind people that I have yet to show anyone the video and audio I have from this years Detroit Fest...but here goes anyway.

I am right this minute converting the set to MP3 and will be uploading it when done. So this post will be updated in an hour or two with a link for all you fine folk to grab at.

Neil Landstrumm @ DEMF 2006 (I refuse to call it whatever the hell it was named this year. pick a name and stick with it)
Download Neil Landstrumm @ DEMF 2006

And for those who keep pestering about the interview. I will try my hardest to get it ready tomorrow. We'll make it a Neil weekend. Don't even ask about the video...my PC and Camcorder wont communicate anymore. So I'll have to go elsewhere to transfer. The problem there is...I never leave my house.

I know so many people from Minnesota it's getting a bit silly. No really.

Out of all of them though Paul is my favorite. he's my prrrrrrrecious. But his age is starting to show. I always thought a sure sign of advancing age was your first grey pubic hair. I now know it's really a flamboyant mix-up, mash-down, sideways twist of samples, loops and hits from your childhood's musical surroundings.

What I'm trying to spit out here is that Paul Birken has given me, and thus all of you, an Unreleased track that him and Scott Radke put together under their moniker "Rokken".

So here it is. The first ever "Murky Track" a freely available, Unreleased track in high-quality Wav and Mp3 formats.

Rokken "Daft League Master-Mix" Wav File Version Download

Rokken's little corner on the web: www.rokken.us - more tracks in lower quality available and a little bit of info. If you want or need more just holla!

Spread the love, leave a thank you comment for Paul to read, visit Paul's site or buy (Ah!) one of his records. I do believe there may be more in the pipes too.

Bleep 37 was an extra long, double dong.

Two guys contributed mixes at my request and we now have a 2.5 hour archive to wade through.

I say:
This is one hard and nasty Techno record. I wasn't too fond of the last CCC on their own label. There was only 1 track I dug. I still bought it of course. I'm silly like that. Anyway, I really like A1 and B2 on this EP. They've got some cool sounds and efx going on. Still...as with most CCC this is what I feel to be very Tool oriented. Their stuff doesn't have enough to it to stand on their own for too long, great sounding oddball corkers to toss in now and then though. I'm a bit of a sucker for them i think...who knows? Not me.

As with the last record I talked about for my "Influences" section this is a chicago stomper. A good chunk of what I mention as having influenced me will definitely be Chicagoan or at least have that feel to it. This one I first heard played by a local Techno DJ and didn't rest until I'd found it. 3M Time is the track I drool over and it's to be found in a mixtape I happen to have recorded. So if you want to hear it in the mix with a ton of other good jerking and jacking chi-town sounds I urge you to grab the mix...

Ipecac says:
Take Electro Bass Noise, Gore Grind, IDM Glitch, Calliope, Breakcore Gabber Jungle, Gangsta Rap, mix them all together and what you get? Otto Von Schirach’s Maxipad Detention of course!

Otto Von Schirach (half Cuban / half German) was born in 1978 in the swamp infested refugee world of Little Havana Miami. As a child his grandmother practiced Santeria and White Magic, which opened his eyes to the strange and bizarre. Otto grew up listening to Miami Bass, Gore Grind, Gangsta Rap and Afro Cuban Noise. In 1995 Otto bought his first drum machine from a crack-head just 2 blocks from his mom’s house. Right away he recognized his passion for grimy diamond soaked kick drums through distorted fuzz muck.

Unfortunately I don't have audio samples for this one and the Monox page isn't up to date with them either. I did find one online store that has them though, so if you're willing to go through with the added effort of clicking over to it, I send you off...

MNX 05 @ Covert (Covert is a good store -- one of my top 4 favorites!)

I actually don't like 3 of the tracks on this EP. I haven't been a fan of Adam for a long time now. This direction he's headed down just kinda irritates me. It my newly found feelings of dislike for his new stuff gelled at DEMF this year when I saw him perform right before Neil Landstrumm. Very boring I found. On a slightly less doomsayer vibe, Photosensitivity is a killer track. Heavy distorted industrial clanking beats with those little bits in all the right spots. My copy of this arrived yesterday and I've already dropped this track into a mix. Maybe I'll put it online.

I don't stop by the Subhead site much anymore. I wish I did. That would mean that I would have found this sooner...I've been shamed. Someone had to point it out to me...ARGH!

Thanks Cynthia!

Alright, it's a CD first off. So those of you who don't buy vinyl might prefer this release to past things I've posted. Seems rather affordable too, It looks like they only want £6.50 for it. Which in my currency, the mighty Canadian Dollar, that's only about $15 or half the price of a regular store-bought CD. wicked.

I'm all over the Wee-man's track on this one!

Rotten Row Says:

Miro Merlak AKA qwerty lives in London but comes from Croatia. Since the late 90s he has released several albums of experimental electronic music on the Phthalo, Piehead and Kitchen Sink labels and is currently involved with the Prikljucak internet radio station. The Concrete Acid EP features these 4 concrete-solid electro acid-influenced tracks which are both dancefloor direct and jittery percussive. The tracklisting is kind of a homage to labels such as Metroplex which favoured the 2 tracks plus versions approach. The 303 mix of 'Concrete Acid' features some melodic assistance from Mr EDMX, and fans of his and the work of Rephlex will not be disappointed. We are delighted to release this killer 12" on Rottenrow and to have qwerty on board!

Excellent artwork by RA. Distributed by Blackhole.

I Say:

Wicked fun bleepy electroy acid tracks. I prefer the two originals over the two alternate mixes, but all are quality. bleep bleep!
