Fun in the Murky Says:
This record has a track I've wanted for AGES. My wife and I have a CD - some random Electro compilation -- that has been in our car for 2+ years now. It's the only CD that has never left the car. It gets listened to multiple times per week. That song is Bang. This isn't the original mix, but it'll suit me just fine as I don't have the original. Classic track (or it should be if it's not considered classic yet!).

I want to go BANG!

So naturally I'm stoked about this record a little more than usual. I did a double fist pump in the air from my chair when I saw the good news.

Veto Says:
There is not a whole lot of hype needed for this superbly packaged double pack. Eight awesome tracks of varied styles from producers across the globe. Featuring established artists such as Exzakt, Boris Divider, Dynamik Bass System, and Supreme.ja to fresh new comers Cryotron, The Ghosts In The Machine, Lethal Agent, & AS1. On top of the track list, this is the follow up to the successful first release of label Bass Fequency Productions and this compilation has brought it to the next level. Compiled by Monotone's label boss Larry McCormick and BFP's Michael Spencer this double pack is full of flavor and is sure to catch the ears of any listener in the club, in shops, or on the net. A must have 2 x 12" for electro and breaks fans around the world. Just have a listen for yourself!

Fun in the Murky Says:
Bass! how low can you go...

Like Veto says, many different Electro and Miami Break flavours in this pack of tunes. Some recognizable samples, some new and inventive twists and enough bounce to listen to at home or out and about.

Due to the Internet being totally radical for hooking people across vast distances (good for Porn too I hear) I've run across a chap that calls himself Doshy. Doshy is a part of a great group of guys putting records out under the Robox Neotech umbrella. Some great bass and bleep Techno and Electro has come out of their camp.

I got a CD full of stuff from Doshy. Tracks and Livesets. I'm not too sure he'd want me putting his tracks online, but livesets are a different story so here's a small collection from a few of the Robox Neotechers...

Fun in the Murky says:
I'm not 100% sure how or when I first stumbled upon Alex's material. I think it was shortly after the Aeox stuff since he used to be a part of that project. However it happened he's always impressed me. I buy his Techno, his Acid, his Beats, his Hip Hop, his Electro - everything. Anything Alex does, I find I enjoy. I can't say that about many other people.

This EP has his vocal tom foolery strewn throughout it to good effect as usual, sometimes backed up with solid music and sometimes supporting solid back beats. Definitely good cross-genre material here. The kind of thing that should be forced upon people who think Techno is all thud thud thud or worse...Paul Oakenfold.

Tomorrow is another Frequency Radio Internet broadcast. The last one with Tabstop was really the first one I ever heard about, but I think I'll be keeping an eye on them for now on.

Since the early 90s Bondy (Volum of electro duo Volsoc) has been bringing us his vision of a cartoon future of blips, bleeps, squeaks and tweaks, all fed through your speakers and straight into your brain by a rhythmic salvo of breakbeats, bass, and straight-up, glitched-up funk.

Bondy’s first full-length solo album, The Path of Most Resistors marks the culmination of this effort to date, while at the same time representing a subtle departure – not just for Bondy, but for Compost too. Make no mistake; this is a record that is grounded in the kind of solid, machine funk grooves, synthetic melodies and sci-fi atmospheres that the best electro has always brought us. But as Bondy appears to have asked, why stop there?

Fun in the Murky says:
When I started listening to the first track I was just about to turn it off. It's first impression was not good. After about 10 seconds I realized I'd almost made a mistake! There are six songs on this LP and I only truly disliked one of them (Cold Reformer). The rest is either decent pop-ish, almost Depeche Mode in feeling and/or killer electro tracks. Good work from Volum once again.

The last Frequency Radio had Tabstop as one of it's guest performer's. Tabstop's music goes over very well at Fun in the Murky HQ (my bedroom). The live stream is done with, but the archives are now up and you can catch Tabstop's, Jesper Hake's and hECtiC's sets whenever you're ready.

The full length tunes are great fun on the A side and the B side has some loops (ok more than some) that are really good. When this first came out I wouldn't leave it alone. I think it was the more minimal, acidic and blepy loops that were the gooduns. Some real juicy bits to use as fills if you're the sort who can't keep still.

Here's some mixes passed to me by someone who's busy ripping his old party mixtapes. More on the way!

ESP Live at Intellect Chicago 1995
Josh Wink Live at Unwind 1994 Wisconsin

These are obviously very old and recorded from cassette tapes so don't complain about the quality. Just suck it up and enjoy to the best of your ability.

As a reminder I have also ripped a couple dozen of my old party mixtapes as well. Only about a hundred to go!

I've always loved playing at The Purple Room. Great crowd and a Dj booth that's a pleasure to play in, which is rare in this area. I wasn't going to post it, but now that Adam Beyer is also on the same night in the same area I figured The Purple Room needed a hand in their Promo.

First banging set in ages it seems. I'll bring my usual two bags of jack tracks and nipple tweakers. I seem to recall not having access to the back of the mixer last time for recording purposes, but i'll see if that can be corrected this time via some other work around.

I'm pretty sure Paul has snow down in his neck of the woods already. Which would explain why he had the time to pass along an email with information for the next three Tonewrecker releases. It was either that or risk frostbite on the heiny.

Paul Birken "Junk Profanity" Tonewrecker 12
A1 Fender Bender [ listen ]
A2 A Depiction of Eviction [ listen ]
B1 Floor Wax [ listen ]
B2 Camp Spooky

The title of this EP could change a bit, but the catalog number wont so keep an eye to the sky for this as it should drop by Christmas from Veto Distribution.

Tonewrecker 13 needs a bit of an intro as it's not your regular EP..

Rather than the typical remix project where the original samples are
provided to the remixer, I thought I'd leave it open for interpretaion.
The only rules for the track were to incorporate the following phrase in
any way the artist saw fit.

IM IN THE POCKET
GOT MY GAME IN CHECK
MACHINES LOCKED DOWN
AND A SYSTEM TO WRECK

Artists involved are Miro Pajik, TJR, Cannibal Cooking Club, and myself [Paul Birken].
Look for a w - i - d - e range of styles on this one to cover all corners
of the "techno" map.

Sounds like a killer idea if you ask me. Even if you don't ask me I'm still going to insist it's a killer idea.

Tonewrecker 14 - Yes! We're waaaaaay into the future now so I'm sure little details might not be accurate, but I'll share it anyway even if it's just to compare notes to when it does happen.

TW14 Lief Ryan vs. Paul Birken
This is going to be a joint project between Growth and Tonewrecker and
we'll be looking to get the releases to drop on both labels simultaneously
if possible through our good friends @ Veto distribution. Tonewrecker will
probably take the heavy beasts and Growth will take the wonkfest outbreak.

Again, Paul has followed his nose (ear) and found the Fruit Loops (good music). Lief has some great stuff out and his tracks lately have been non-stop bass funk, glitch madness. Love it!

To wrap up this lengthy (actual) news post I'll point out that paul played in Brooklyn last week and it turns out someone there had a camcorder (or other equivalent gadget) and has posted the resulting footage to Youtube!

Verg has put his newest Podcast online. It's a goodie. He had Dr. Trance over to talk about very early Toronto electronic music scene (think 1991 and forward).

This is probably my favorite show of Verg's so far. I wasn't around that far back...in 1991 I was only 13. but the memories of old parties are most welcome!

n this episode: Don Berns (aka Dr. Trance) and I review some of the tracks, and stories on what started the Toronto rave scene. We recall those early events which kicked off the whole electronic music experience here in Toronto. Have you heard the track "James Brown is Dead"? Ever wonder where the Toronto rave scene started? Drop in, hang out, as we spend some time talking about "the beginning".

For the most part I've always included as much info as can be expected (plus more!) with each show. Now there's no more dilly dallying. Each show's mix will be as complete as I can make it and I'll even take the time to write up little comments for each track. I like the idea of commenting about each track. Not one long continuous narration, but whatever little nuggets of info, personal feelings or suggestions to something similiar I can come up with as the show is playing. It might be hated and ignored. it might be loved and read. I'll settle for enjoyed and skimmed over.

Enjoy the show folks!

Playlist:

01 - Millbrook Experiments
Some creepy sample of a child talking about how life altering taking Acid can be. Found in a video on youtube and sampled one sunday morning.

02 - S-max "Braincell Harvester" Boogizm 008 [I Love My Camouflaged Consumerizm EP 2004]
S-max is one of the odd folks behind Boogizm. Boogizm is a glitched out, bass funked, Max msp and quirky rhythm toting 'Minimal Techno' label that actually keeps it interesting unlike some other labels I could mention.
Discog's link w/ more information...

03 - Chris Duckenfield "Modern House Is Rubbish" Odori 35 [Duckbeats 2 EP 2006]
Chris Duckenfield's earlier output on Primitive is what led me to him. I think pretty much anything he touches is gold and what defines his particular musical niche. Also very versatile, his releases can be played with virtually anything and it always seems to work. I don't question it. I only buy it.
Discog's link w/ more information...

04 - S-max "Sweet Antidote" Boogizm 004 [Bingo Bubble Burner EP 2002]
Some more S-max. I was on a boogizm hunt while recording this set. Digging for all my Boog Eps, but only found a few. The shelves be cluttered.
Discog's link w/ more information...

05 - Stewart Walker "Star Machine" Mosquito 012 [Artififical Music For Artificial People EP 1998]
One of Stewart's earlier Eps. Back when he was still doing tracky, bleepy numbers. It was soon after this he started into his 'musical' side of things. Read: boring. Although he did do good stuff after wards I will always love this EP and the Matrix ones just a little bit more.
Discog's link w/ more information...

06 - Tok Tok "Standard F" Tresor 64 [Tresor 5 LP 1997]
A minimalish, key stabby slow burner. Taken from a great Comp on Tresor. It had loads of Brighton and Detroit crossover stuff on it, which I guess you can say this track fits in with.
Discog's link w/ more information...

07 - No Brand Just Music 01 [2006]
I have no idea what this is. it says "No Brand Just Music" on it and that's all. It's borderline too "floaty" for my likeing, but has enough jack to it to hold my interest. Would be nice knowing who made the darn thing though.

08 - Unknown "Bulb Exposure" Has Been 01 [2006]
Again, no real info for this release. The track name and label are printed on it, but no lue as to who did it or what. Sounds like it might be a mishmash of samples as I recognize bits of it, but that could be my over active imgaination. Whatever it is...this record ROCKS. A & B sides are both killer tunes.

09 - Rotorik "(To Ride) Streethawk" Crime Productions 003 [America's Most Wanted EP 2004]
Rotorik has his own style. Hard to describe, but if you hear a few of his Eps you pick up on it quick. It's probably just a matter of him knowing what the hell he's doing as opposed to the rest of us pretending. Naturally Crime is Mark Hawkins' label. Now defunct as he tries to figure out where he's heading with it all.
Discog's link w/ more information...

10 - Paul Birken "Sufferflex" Framework Music 16 [We Pledge Allegiance EP 2003]
I'm pretty sure that's what this song is. (Paul...confirm??). I only have the white label which was given to me by Bob Brown when I made him roller skate all the way to Toronto in 2003 for a gig no one showed up at! Killer tune...has the signature Birken badassness to it.
Discog's link w/ more information...

11 - Dr. Nowhere Vs. The Maverick Dj "Cabbbage Rock" Scandinavia NYC 009 [The Automated Leisure EP 1998]
This record is actually Si Begg lending a hand to Neil. Giving him some tweaked out acid lines and shuffled beats for his Scandinavian reign of terror. Quirky. Full of simple loops that are well timed. Quite catchy in the end.
Discog's link w/ more information...

12 - Unknown "Untitled" Primitive 04 [Primitive Urges Volume 2 EP 1997]
Unknown artist...but I smell Chris Duckenfield at it again. This whole label wrecks people. Each release is Solid and can be just as rewarding in a club or at home on the hi-fi.
Discog's link w/ more information...

13 - User "Side A" User 1A [1A EP 1998]
Huh? What? I can't hear you over the Todd Terry samples...Ok, yeah. he did it to no end, but the first few User's were tight. Simple rhythm tracks of a Millsy nature that just don't seem to age. Whether that's User's influence or Todd Terry's I don't know.
Discog's link w/ more information...

14 - CLS "Can You Feel It (In House Dub)" 541 [Serious Beats 2 EP 2006]
had to back the user up with a Todd Terry...had to! I think most everyone recognizes this tune. The hoover's suck your face off if it's loud enough. Best listened to at night, in a dark room full of 2000 of your best friends. Should be sweat dripping from the ceiling too.
Discog's link w/ more information...

15 - The Manimals "Manimal In The House" Growth Recordings 003 [Remedies For Nervous Disorders and Healing EP 2006]
1 track off of Lief Ryan's Growth label based in the UK. The Manimals are Cristian Vogel, Dave Tarrida and Tobias Schmidt and before you ask...yes it's insane. Judging from this and the other solo Eps coming out soon from these guys their styles have switched up a bit and I definitely approve of the direction.
Discog's link w/ more information...

16 - S-max "Shaolin Onik Oink" Boogizm 006 Shaolin Toothpaste EP 2002]
Boogi, boogi boo!
Discog's link w/ more information...

17 - Neil Landstrumm "We Are Pleased To Serve You" Tresor 174 [Compilation Volume 9 LP 2001]
This, I think, is one of my favorite Landstrumm tracks. Maybe up there in the top 5. Great tune, it's so different than anything else people call Techno. Very refreshing and I found out a few times it's not a good track to end with because apparently some people don't like to mix into it. bah.

We Are The Strange

user-pic
Vote 0 Votes

I thought I would mention this Movie today as it contains some music written by my favorite Transexual Swiss Rebels. I've yet to see it myself, but it doesn't look bad at all. It seems kinda oddballish which definitely suits me to a T. Judging from the Photo Galley I'd say it's an eclectic combination of Stop-motion, animation and regular film. Definitely some odd looking characters in it. An 8-bit (mostly) sound track and strange behaviour are the rule of the day!

We are the Strange is an animated feature film in which two diametrically opposed outcasts fight for survival in a sinister fantasy world. After meeting in the somber Forest of Still Life, an abused young woman (Blue) reluctantly follows a care free dollboy(Emmm) to Stopmo City on his unreasonable quest for ice cream. They're lives are constantly in jeopardy after they're caught in the middle of a deadly battle between bizarre monsters on their way to the ice cream shop. A flamboyant ultraviolent hero(Rain) appears and effortlessly dispatches all the horrible monsters in his path. Blue meets Rain before he partakes in an impossible battle against the source of all that is evil in Stopmo City. When it seems as if darkness will have the last laugh a gleaming fist made of aluminum foil bursts through the ground thus starting the final showdown between mega_good and hyper_evil.

I first heard of these guys from Carsten Rechenberger of Miditonal. he was pretty into some of their stuff about 10-12 months ago and said I should check out some clips. I dug the stuff I heard then, but then subsequently forgot about it.

Just today the Drivers themselves posted their latest LP on the No Future Message Board and it all came flooding back.

The first time I heard them I liked their stuff, but I wasn't about to run out and buy it. It was good, but not something that really tweaked my ear. To tell the truth it kinda bored me. Interesting sounds and patterns, but not enough variation or working of what was there I think. This release while still suffering a little bit from lack of variety is leaps and bounds ahead of where they were a year ago. I'll be grabbing this one up in my next order for sure.

A local lad pointed out Nature Records to me today and I have to admit it's a killer label. Not having heard of it before means a whole lot of catching up to do which makes me as giddy as a schoolgirl.

I'm currently listening to the new Dynarec LP that they have listed as their most current release. It's got heavy Detroit and Drexciyan roots for sure, but it touchs upon a lot more. There's a track that reminds me of Depeche Mode (sorta) and some old Poindexter style drum machine workout too.

Check out Nature Records

There's a Flash based music player along the bottom of the site. Take a clicksy through what they have loaded up and enjoy the Detroit, Electro and Acid goodies!

Holy crap. You know how you go through most of a year hearing a lot of good records and you think to yourself "Golly gee, I've heard some good music this year"? Well I do. And to be honest at a certain point I think your tastes become a little dulled. Every once in a while you need something out of the ordinary to revitalize your ears and remind you about what's worth waiting for.

This EP did that for me. It's got elements that will sooth your piss-abouts at home and wreck people on dance-floors. It's almost kinda like a jack in the box. happy go lucky theme followed with a pop...That pop in this case is deadly.

All four tracks are superb and vary only in degree and mood. Any and all of the "minimal" dj's out there will be best not to sleep on this. As well as the rest of us that don't bother with such distinctions ;).

Veto Says:
Following the success of the masterfully selected series of 4 volumes - “Over The Counter Culture” - this one off special features four remixes of the 80's pop classic ‘Fame' and was inspired by the much sought after 'Wee killed him EP' by The wee djs , released in 1999 on SCSI AV , which featured it's very own Fame remix. This latest EP is made up of remixes by Silicon Scally (Carl Finlow) , Bass Kittens , Volum and a new updated mix by The wee djs. These four interpretations bring deep nasty basslines and beats to smash dance floors worldwide and show Fame at its darkest. With the A side ranging from Silicon Scally's stylistic sound, which brings a determined and involving electro mix, to The wee djs broken, dark melodic bass filled second version of this classic track. The B side continues the theme with Volum's own solid, floor driven, twisted and glitchy take and finally Bass Kittens brings his cheeky 808 San Francisco breaks sound smashing in to end this EP with a bang.

Packaged once again in hand-decorated packaging, with brand new artwork, and with the first 400 copies coming on clear vinyl, this is another very desirable product for Downwards collectors and techno fans alike. Originally released in 1996, hot on the heels of his pioneering single releases “Montreal” and “Application of language” , this groundbreaking LP further solidified Downwards reputation as a label at the forefront of the burgeoning techno scene, and anyone who wants an insight into what minimal meant before it was hijacked by 6 million anonymous producers with a copy of Ableton Live and no imagination could do a lot worse than giving this record a close listen.

Fun in the Murky Says:
I originally discovered this album when I heard Terry Mullan play the last track "Cold Water". It's like a DBX track that's been bronzed. Not much variation to it at all. It's basically a very small handful of loops that are cycled through, but it's so hypnotic you don't even notice. The whole LP is similiar, but the rest of it is definitely much harder. I remember locals DJs like Marinko Jareb and Adam Marshall playing it quite a bit and only managed to get a copy myself years later during the first repress in 1999 or so. I highly recommend this LP.

Steph of Null, Antikonsum and Ghettofuck; part of the Errorism crew; and general Techno thug has put his newest liveset online.

It was recorded at Christian Schacta's (Syntax Error) label release party for Feinwerk #10 at the AK 44 Club. It's very much in line with his Null Records EP. The same ultra clean, bass and glitch Techno full of edits and weird rhythms. It's very upbeat stuff and has a touch more synth work than I remember in his last set. All in all a very good live set once again.

I do recall him haivng a split EP coming out soon...? I'll look into it.

Tabstop posted up a file sharing link of his latest recorded Live Set. It's too good to let it sit on some crappy rapideshare server though. So it's now on the Murky server. I highly recommend downloading and listening to this set. I liked the demo set he gave me a while back, but this is even better. He's definitely been hard at work with both his track writing and sound development. I don't understand why he hasn't gotten any releases under his belt yet. I'd buy 80% of the stuff in this set minimum.

My compadre Vergel has a new episode out...

Staying true to the tradition, I welcome Toronto artist Adam Marshall to the show for a 60 min. podcast on all things techno. We cover all the bases: his techno history, early pieces of hardware, software vs. vinyl, and some of those great stories about what brought him to where he's at today. Not only that, but we also end the show with a couple of tracks from his New Kanada label including a track from his upcoming EP - Naked(NK03).

The rest of Verg's shenanigans can be found here as usual.

I've been really enjoying the Spacebar Sentiments, Wee Dj's stuff lately. Glad to see there is some deep and dark electro coming out that I like again...it was few and far between for a while...

It seems despite having a silly problem that prevented the sharing of downloads for 2+ weeks there was still an increase in site usage. Sure the Unique visitor count was a little lower than the last few months, but the world city coverage was a LOT bigger - 300+ extra cities this month. That's good news. I think the new goal will be 10,000 Uniques for 3 month straight. Why not? I thought 5,000 was silly when I first started.
