December 2006 Archives

Cristian Vogel has usually used his No Future / Erutufon for all the random bits of mental fodder and for real news as it relates to him. Lately, I guess he's noticed that there are easier and better ways of keeping everyone up to date. He's started a Blog on the music site Last.FM.

Last FM is a site I've used on and off for a year or two now and it's pretty cool. They have plug-ins for most audio software that keep tabs on what you listen to and it can then show you who else in the world has similar tastes. Aside from seeing whom also listens to Frank Sinatra and Autechre together, it'll also suggest artists that you may not know about. If you use their Internet Radio stream it'll also play you tracks that it sees are related to what you've already listened to and "scrobbled". Can be very handy for finding new music or just seeing who else is as picky as you are.

Back to Cristian though...

He has started his own blog (which I guess is another feature Last.FM provides) and he's already got a handful of stuff posted in there. It's a more personal flow than his posts on the No Future message board. in it he talks about projects he's working on in regards to his Studio, sound design and random thoughts on gigs etc..

It's got an RSS feed so if you're into that handy little protocol, hop to it and subscribe. Or just do it oldschool and check the page out every few days.

A while back I played at an electro & chiptune night. I recorded the whole night and have all the audio...I've forgotten to post it. I just now stumbled across the sets while looking for something else on my server.

2 electro sets & 3 Live chiptune sets

Chiptune Sets
Touchboy
Texas Hold'em
Lutin

Dj Sets
Cryogenic
Trevor Wilkes

There is a bit more audio, but it's distorted and sounds like crap so I wont bother wasting your time with it.

Overall it was a fun night. It was my first real experience or dive into the chiptune realm and it wasn't bad at all. Admittedly it wasn't ALL my cup of tea. But the majority of it was fun to watch and hear. The Electro...well Electro always goes over well. Bleep bleep.

Newcleus "Classics" Deeplay Soultec LP 01
A Jam On It
B Computer Age (Push The Button)
C1 Jam On Revenge (The Wikki Wikki Song)
C2 Automan
D Destination Earth (1999)

They Say:
So much could be said about this electro/hip hop cult act from the 80's. But we won't be rambling about it so buy it while it last. It's an exclusive limited double pack with 5 of the most profilic songs they made in their original shape. And if that's not enough, there are mega RARE mixes* never been released before...

*Jam On It is included complete with Chilly B's entire rap verse and the entire 1st chorus.
Destination Earth (1999) with the original arrangement and vocal.

For all you guys who grew up with their music. Now you have the chance to experience the great vibe again. And for all of you youngsters, now it's your turn to see/listen to one of the artists who influenced many of the famous producers of today.....

Fun in the Murky Says:
I don't have to say anything. If you know these tracks, now is the chance to get newer pressings. If you don't. Find them. Break-beat...Electro-boogie! Wiki wiki wiki wiki...

PS.
Push the Button is the best!

I set a new land speed record today. I got stuck at work doing over-time on the one day I need to be home by a certain time -- to start the show. So that explains the 5 minute late start. Would have been worse had the roads been as busy as they are when I usually leave. No one even noticed I bet. I'm anal about punctuality though, so it drove me nuts.

This show was a bit of a brain fart in slow motion. I had a Detroit Techno theme request 3 weeks ago and I actually put together a Detroit Techno show (now to be Bleep 48). Between the time I finished that mix Mark said he'd be willing to do a show. Bump goes my mix.

I then forgot about the next Bleep being Mark's. I made the mix he gave me available for download. Brain Fart. I can't even blame the stress of Holidays. I don't celebrate. Brain Fart.

The word Miffed was used.

So I checked my server logs and saw there wasn't too many downloads yet (<100). So I hid the file, edited the news entry and prepared myself and the mix for Bleep.

Bleep 47: Mark Hawkins Live

For those of you who don't know who Mark is, here are some links:
Mark's label Crime Productions
Mark on Myspace
Mark on Last.fm
Mark on Discogs

This mix is Mark performing Live in Taganrog, Russia. It was an event hosted by Phubriq, a Russian Net-Label. Vadz, Mark's host while there, and one of the Dj's that night also gave me his set with tracklist. It's available here. Techno City 2 looked like a fun night. The Garage Club -- where it was held -- Looks a hell of a lot swankier than anything where I live. There was also a lot of people obviously there to party and jam to Mark's set. How do I know all this? No I didn't merely take the word of someone. I watched the Video

I'm told MasCon's set at a recent ugly Funk party went over very well. So well that when he got home he decided to do a studio version of the Live-Set. Good news for those of us not in attendance.

Funk A'Noid "Pimp" Dead Rose Records 01
A1 - Pimp
B1 - Pimp (Dave Tarrida & Craven Remix)

presale & samples @ Deejay

Fun in the Murky Says:
A new Label I've been waiting for for a LONG time. Dave originally mentioned it was in the works back in July and it was originally due to drop in September. I had nearly forgotten about it completely.

I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to this. It's not like the last bit of Work Dave has done, it reminds me more of....I'm not quite sure. It does sound like something you could fit in with a wide range of styles. The original (Funk A'Noid = Funk D'Void) is up there as well. I can't say for sure which track I like better if it is one or the other. This might be one of those EPs that are wholly decent. Like whoa!

If the plans I heard back in July still hold release #2 on Dead Rose will be a Dave Tarrida Solo EP. I'll start keeping an eye and ear peeled now in case they try to sneak it by.

Well being that I was dragged all over the place today, I didn't really have time to put anything in order for today's blip.

But I always have a backlog of little nuggets to share so no worries!

This is a site that was given to me (I wonder who!) when I asked just who the heck Naks was. Naks of course being the chap behind the first release on the new label Otto. Well, once asked I was given this site. Apparently if you dig around enough there is a virtual ton of audio and info on this crew of guys who love their music. Dig in.

Bleep not Bleep's are mixes that I record with the intent of using them as Bleep Radio shows. This time around I've decided not to use this one because I'd have to hold onto it for 3 whole weeks. The next show on Thursday is already done (Detroit Themed) so I'd have to wait seemingly forever to use this one. I can't wait that long.

I was going to comment on every track like the Bleep shows, but damn this tracklist is huge. I do want to have time to eat today. Maybe even shower at one point.

A fine and upstanding lad who goes by the name of Vadz and Mark Hawkins recently played together at the Garage Club in the port city of Taganrog, Russia. The event (Techno City 2) was hosted by Phubriq in which Vadz is apart of. Phubriq being, of course, a Techno net-label. Of course!

Enough dilly-dallying. Here's the goods that were recorded:

Vadz is working on writing up a tracklisting for his DJ mix so when he emails that back to me I'll edit this to include it. The video is awesome, looks like it was a very fun and ego boosting night for Mark. Hawkins! Hawkins! Hawkins! Hawkins! Is the chant you hear fairly early into his Live Set.

Veto Says:
Serious new electro , diverse, melodic and as always masterful production from the Blotnik Brothers. These are Swedens' best electro producers making a huge mark on the world wide scene. This trio are blazing a path into the future with oldskool, nuskool, floor burning electro-breaks tunes. 'Mizuage' is their third release on Satamile and pulls together all of their influences into one seriously heavy and contemporary electro/breaks LP. Kraftwerk, Dr. Scissors, Anthony Rother, Aux 88, Bell, Daft Punk and many others have been their influences both then and now, but they will always maintain a unique and influential sound of their own. Keep your eyes and ears open for more from this hugely talented production trio. A colourful, emotive LP. No expense spared as usual in production with 310k graphic design out of Amsterdam.

Fun in the Murky Says:
Disk 1 rocks. Almost...ALMOST wee dj-ish electro bombs.

Year End Charts?

So as you all know it's getting to be that time. I figure I may as well get this out of the way today as I have no idea how nuts the next week or two is going to be. I personally don't partake in the celebration that is Christmas, but when everyone around you does, it ends up affecting you almost the same.

Instead of just writing up a quick, stereotypcial, hum-drum, boner-in-your-ear DJ chart though I think I'll put a bit more energy into it.

It's so hard to remember what you've bought in only a single year!

These fifteen records took me about an hour to come up with. I remember playing them a lot, keeping them in my bag for extended periods and just generally loving the crap out of them. Sometimes it's the whole record, sometimes it's only one of the songs. Each and every title in that list is appreciated for different reasons. The records that tend to stand out, stand the test of time for me are usually the ones that are hard to label. Sure you can sit there and duct tape your fancy genre labels to each track or record, but when you really listen to these you start to realize they will fit in with more than their stereotyped or supposed neighbors.

What I like to call the Cross Genre Hooks. Records that will in the end (or should) grab the attention of someone who doesn't typically listen to that "style" and because it has elements or this or that it lures them into the realm of better music. Let's try to make the 2007 list in a year's time even longer. I think I'm going to start tagging the records I feel fall into this category with something to let me me track them. At the end of next year I'll be able to look back at a list and see if I still feel it holds true.

Now it's time too see what everyone else is enjoying. Share the lists, make some recommendations, spread the word.

A2 Fin Phranklin
A3 Ndk

B1 Quick & Smart
B2 Syntax Error

Pre-Ordering and listening to track samples can be done @ Deejay.de The distributor of all things Miditonal
Due out January, 2006

Miditonal Says:
get prepared for another sharp amplification. this time our team delivers 100% straight madness. feinwerk´s syntax error shows his love to old brighton stuff while ndk mashes hiphop funk with powerful bassline. fin adds some tricky wonk to his very own ride, quick & smart goes straight forward with charming synths and finally copy & paste serves us with a smashing tool and phat modulation. you can´t beat that force !

Fun in the Murky Says:
When I was first told about the label miditonal by the kind folks who work at Trackheads it was just after the 2nd release. I remember listening to the first 2 and loving the raw, tweak happy tracks that well obviously done by people who liked having fun. Ever since then each release has gotten stronger and stronger. Carsten and crew have a good ear for the hard edged yet inventive Techno that they release on their label.

They just so happen to also enjoy releasing artists with no previous releases. Doing the digging that this requires probably explains why there are some tracks on previous Miditonal records that are quit unlike anything else.

Another strong release for this unique label.

I just noticed that the comments submitted to articles in the last month or so have been getting snagged by my Junk filter. I don't know why it's suddenly developed an attitude problem, but I lower it's aggressive behavior a notch so comments should show up again if you leave one. Unless of course it is spam!

Feinwerk 11 marks a shift in focus for the label and crew. Floor friendly, yet still freaking the funk as this EP proves!

Fun in the Murky Says:
The last two EPs Toby has worked on have been knock outs. The Scandinavia EP he did with Neil (That Cats' and Dogs track kicks my ass) and the Ep on Input-Output. Both seem to be a slight shift away from what he's done in past. It's recognizable, but with a twist. I can see them and now this one, definitely opening some eyes and schooling some Tech heads.

Neil's tracks..I don't even know what to say about his stuff anymore. Still great, top form. One of the tracks reminds me off some of the Tresor stuff. Notably the Scandinavia Sessions EP. Feel the Bassbins.

The first Murky Mixes call was a success in that there were mixes sent in. I would have loved it if there were so many I ran out of fingers trying to count them, but that's something to shoot for for next time.

Still, we've got a good selection of mixes here to enjoy!

I got a note about this wee little birdy today after work. I've listened to the first half and skimmed through the second half so far and I'm loving it. I still can't quite pin-point with accuracy what it is I love about Dave's tracks, but they continue to kick my arse. Grunge and tweak slammed together? Amen sistah!

Bleep Bleep Bleep!

As show 46 winds up I can't help but notice we're nearing the two year mark for Bleep Radio's 2nd incarnation. The first run lasted 1 year followed by a short break as I reorganized my life and went back to business. Nearly 3 years in total, it certainly doesn't feel like it. I've got a pretty good track record too. In that whole span of time I've only had to cancel 1 show. Maybe I should put my head to it and see if I can come up with something special for the anniversary...

While I'm pondering if anyone has anything they'd like to hear, don't be shy, toss your idea to me. Themed mixes, Guest mixes...???

Sir Real on Rodz - Konez

I saw the pre-notice about this back on November 15th. I then promptly forgot about it. I'm very grateful that the Rodz-Konez boys archive their stuff indefinitely.

For those of you not sure who Sir Real is, well now is the time to become a little more familiar with his music and work. Sir Real [Also called "Neil Spragg" by his mother] has been writing electronic music and releasing it since about 1996. Techno, Electro; whatever you want to call it, it's always crossed a few lines. However, even earlier in his musical path, he was drumming in different Birmingham area bands (think late 80's).

Business wise, Neil started Round Records before he had anything to do with his current [K]rack-troni[k] project and while I've personally never heard the Round Record material, I have heard the [K]rack-troni[k] material. On top of running one of my current favorite Electro labels Neil also works alongside some other chaps at Veto Distribution. So he's making the tunes and helping others get theirs out. Sounds like a regular do-gooder.

Si Begg always seems to have 100 things on his plate. It makes me wonder how he keeps track of all of his projects. I can't even finish 1 thing.

His newest aural assault is the "Jetlag and Tinnitus Part 1" and it's little sister "Jetlag and Tinnitus Reworks Part 1". He has previews available on his website so head on over and take a boo. To be honest the original "My Style" and the other tracks are great for what they are. Begg has only ever improved in the studio, yet I'm partial to the Cynthia Stern mix myself. Possibly something to do with the Broken beat used? I find Begg's stuff to have that heavy digital feel to it, while Cynthia's has a somewhat looser and more energetic flavour. You're welcome to your own opinions though!

Green Velvet "Shake & Pop Remixes" Relief Records 2033
A1 - Shake & Pop (Mark Grant Remix)
A2 - Shake & Pop (Gantman Remix)
B1 - Shake & Pop (DJ Sneak Remix)
B2 - Shake & Pop (Mark Grant Dub)

Fun in the Murky Says:
After a shed load of releases which did my ears no service Relief has finally took a header in a direction I like. This release and the one I mentioned yesterday both have that old abused system and dirty warehouse/club vibe to them. Not your pretty club-no. Seeing Gant-man on remix duty even caught me by surprise. I haven't seen or heard of that guy in ages. Dance Mania say what!

This Ep is another great return to form for a label which in my eyes got caught up in...to be nice I wont say anything at all.

I love a good tracky work out!

X2 / Saturn V "Primtive Cypher" Relief Records 2031
A1 - X2 "Time ELEVATION Rhythm"
B1 - X2 "Zeta 1"
B2 - Saturn V "[Kontrol] Your Mind"

Fun in the Murky Says:
I don't really know anything about this. it could be old tracks repressed or it could be new tracks pressed. i don't know. What I do know is what I learned listening to some samples. The X2 tracks are killer. They're so "old acid" it leads me to believe these are represses. If these are new than whoever X2 is gets a "hats off". To sum up; A1 & B1 are acid gems. I actually do hope these are new tracks. It gives my cynical and jaded side a swift smack.

The Saturn track...I don't really have anything bad to say about it, it just didn't catch my ear.

This definitely marks the first Relief Record I've ordered in a very long time. Looks like there might be more of them worth grabbing soon too...!

Fun in the Murky Says:
It's time again for another Boogizm EP! S-max departed a bit from his maximal glitch workouts and cocked together three great burners. Inner Nothingness got my attention with the subtle "Work it(?)" vocal that pops out from time to time. Tease.

Very interesting to see Mike Shannon with a remix on here. Mike is a Toronto area ex-pat. He has apparently gotten himself some plush digs with the Boog crew and others. It just so happens to be a good remix as well. That's always a bonus.

Okie dokie Pokey. I've got me clips of the forthcoming Coin Op. The last one starring none other than Edit was dope like soap on a rope and this one doesn't suck either!

No absolute release date set for this one, but The man in charge does plan to have it out in September. So you have plenty of time to throw away an old crappy record to make room on your shelf for this new good one.

** Update **
When I originally posted the info for this EP I had no working title or graphics. I now have the title and the graphics once I figure out where I saved them too. So re-listen and go find it. it's out now! And only 3 months behind schedule !! (Better late than never)

Last Friday I played at a little lounge in Guelph. It was a very comfortable place, you quickly fall prey to their dessert menu and sink into the benches. It was my second time playing there and I can't wait to go back.

This is the first half of what I play that night. It's not too crazy. I just played some old Acid and other bumpy things. nice pleasant listen. As you may be able to tell from the tracklisting it was starting to pick up near the end, and indeed I did play some harder and faster records later on, but there were a couple tracks that I've just gotten and don't want to spoil them out yet! They'll find their way into my next home mix.

Hand On The Plow

Fun in the Murky Says:
This Spandex character is on a roll. I've only had his Sleep Debt EP for 2 weeks and his next one is out. I think I even prefer "What's Wrong With You" over Nameless Dread. Even if only because it seems to be more versatile than Nameless Dread. Oddly enough. When I first listened to this EP I immediately thought of the next Sleep Debt Ep due out soon. It's very similar in sound palette and mood I feel. I definitely can't wait for this to arrive.

I'll save the majority of my comments for when I get better or longer samples. All I'll say right now is that I'm damn glad TAFKATAFTA (al.X.e, L.x.a.) has been busy enough to drop this double 10" on us so shortly after a 12" on Scandinavia

Fun in the Murky Says:
This EP isn't exactly brand spanking new. I'm two releases behind for this label. I have been playing the hell out of this record though so I thought I'd finally get around to mentioning it.

While the whole EP is good. It's the B2 Caro Remix that screams in your ear. I haven't been able to not play this track anywhere I go. I always find a way to fit it in. I doubt it'll leave my bag anytime soon. It's got a raw, gritty, funk to it that reminds me of old acid house in spirit. That untouched edge that made each track unique in it's own way. I even get comments from people at clubs after it's played. Definitely not something I get often in these parts. Nearly every time I'm done playing though someone will come up and ask about the track with the screams. it always ends up being the Caro Remix. Class Track, Class Record.
