August 2007 Archives

Another great month, some new stats features. Some new site features to be added once I've caught up with life. Lots of new stuff in other words. Or rather very similar words.

The new site software allows 'Users' to have profiles. That emans we wont have to rely on Cookies storing contact info etc for posting comments. That, plus some other new features like tags and other neat, nifty and gnarly blog/content management things to come. Like I said though, this will all come to be once I've caught up at home. This site isn't the only thing I've got going on!

Oh yeah, and I'll fix the search soon too. It's ugly right now if it works at all. Sorry!

This week's Bleep Radio episode was selected and mixed by Queaver. Some of you may recognize the name from his 'Queaver and Versis' productions (alongside partner Versis of course) and some may know him as the A&R for Kugelbox Records For those who don't know of him at all, consider this your introduction.

Queaver doesn't really consider himself a 'Dj' as he focuses mainly on his Live-Set, he is a fan of Electronic music though and collects the records he finds to be good. He obviously knows how to string them together and would probably do so in public if asked.

Queaver with Versis has productions on Miditonal, Cannibal Cooking Club, Shed and Kugelbox. Check some out!

Back in June I mentioned another release on this label 'Prat'. It has since then come into my possession of course and now it's time for Prat 02 to follow.

This is the 2nd or 3rd French label to hit my radr in the last month or two. What gives? No complaints, but has something happened over there to push out the new and good stuff?

Paul Blackford is at the helm for this one, it's an Electro Ep done well. Maybe even done a little weller than just well. Maybe I should stop making words up.

This here is just a little 30 minute or so mix I did for a local crew who throws events and donates the proceeds to charities in the area. Good cause and all that jazz.

Oddly enough, for perhaps the first time I didn't write up a tracklist when I did this one a few weeks back. All the records used have been put away by now so I'll just wing it and try to list the records used...

Norman's newest record on Feinwerk
Paradroid on Snork
.Xtrak on Yore
Santiago & Bushido on Robsoul
Ltd 11 on Robsoul
The Don - Horn Song
A Swag crew remix

...crap. This sucks and I'm the first to admit it. I have no idea why I didn't write this one down.

Crime Redux

Mark Hawkins has resurrect his old Crime Productions web-site. It's to be used as an Internet archive of things related to him and his music career. It's still in the works, but I don't see why you all can't re-book mark it a early.

Remember, there is also the Doomsday Clock Micro-site which contains the tracks for the album Mark is currently shopping around. Take another peek at that if you missed it the first time around.

Also if you have any of Mark's sets, either Live or DJ could you please let myself or Mark know. If it's one that either of us don't have we'd like to get a hold of it to host in the archive!

Finally, Mark and I are in the process of entering his back catalog into the Murky Shop. So for those of you who wish to pick up any of his releases that you've missed, it should be available soon in Mp3 and WAV formats.

I've nearly always been a fan of Cari's. Although at times he does go through periods of output, both production and dj set wise, that would bore a yak. I set him free during those periods and come back when he's got it all out of his system.

It's very emotionally freeing that way I find.

I don't have anything new by him that's interesting me right now, but I do have a newly re-acquired set of his from one of those awesome periods of his.

Upgrade Time

Yes, I am aware that I usually post something up each and every day. That is why I'm writing this little note. Unfortunately this little note does not include some new bit of info that'll thrill your ears and bother your neighbors.

Fun in the Murky runs on a heavily edited templates of the Blog software Moveable Type. They've just gone and released a huge upgrade and I've gone and installed it. I now know where absolutely nothing is in my Fun in the Murky Control Panel. So I'm going to take today off to learn the new bit of kit. The only reason I'm managing this post is because the "write entry" button is fairly large. And Red.

Also, you may notice a few things that don't work. This will be fixed over the course of a few days. I need to figure out which bits are broke because of the upgrade. This would probably go faster if someone pointed them out to me (bleep@isoprax.com) or we can just wait and see what I catch on my own. I already discovered the search bar doesn't work anymore. So as a temporary fix I inserted a Google search bar. Yes I hate it too.

This week's Bleep Radio show is a 're-Live'. TSR played at a party called 'Wriggle' at Trädgården in Stockholm a few weeks back. This is the Live recording of their set. Tomas sent it over for use as a Bleep show and it's exclusive, aside from the small leak that usually happens from time to time!

More info about Fredrik Askebris, Robert Sundelin and Tomas Nordström AKA TSR can be found here:

As an addendum to the Bleep Radio download you can also check out a short list of a half dozen videos shot at the same party. They are available via the Swedish site Klot.net

Bushby of Digital Distortions has cranked out a new 2 part mix of Electro and beat-sy things. Looks like there's quite a bit of unreleased DD things in there so it'll also be a glimpse of the future. I hope it's dark, dreary and bass heavy.

Aaron Spectre renowned for his releases on Death$ucker, Mashit and Ad Noiseam as well as his storming jungle/breakcore live sets, drops 2 monster cuts for Rag & Bone. Straight up, no messing breakstep largeness with a heavy dancehall swing and a glitchtronic sheen. Not to missed.....

My take on it is a little different. It's not the greatest of the last few Rag & Bone's. It tries to drum up interest with some edits etc, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. The B side I find is the side that perked my ears up and even then After a few more listens I may grow tired of it...remains to be seen whether this one gets added to my cart.

It seems like only yesterday, yet it's been a month! this Thursday, airing immediately before Bleep Radio I might add, is another showdown of ultimate proportions.

Last month's show was the Jungle round and if you haven't voted yet I suggest you do. The judges were quacking on about some of the tracks being too oldshool. I've never heard such nonsense! Let's set them straight democratically.

Jean Louis Huhta and Jesper Dahlbäck are seemingly at it again. Will they ever top Svek 13? Maybe not, but I'd love to hear more of them attempting.

Input-Output Update

My last post regarding Input-Output and their newest release, a CD mixed by Dave Tarrida, was just a short while ago. At the time I said you could email Cynthia Stern for copies of the CD before it was out in stores. I've just now been informed by Cynthia that he has a brand new little web shop set up on I-O's web-site and that the limited T-Shirts are in as well. Combine the two and save bucks. You'll also be really cool.

Mike has put together a bit of a long'un for us all. That's two days in a row we've had some big ol' mixes to enjoy. No wonder I've got nothing productive done this weekend. Mike got permission from a few guys to include some unreleased bits, so have your ears peeled for some tasty stuff you haven't heard before!

..bit of a marathon set (hence the name) 34 tracks, almost two hours. lots of different stuff, grimy, jackin, wonky and a bit of acid of course.

Cogitatur sets

A while back, in Poland, there was a night by the name of Cogitatur. I don't know what that means. But that doesn't prevent me from sharing the sets that I've now got in my possession.

I tried something new for this show. I turned on the camcorder for a wee stretch. figure there are some setting/quality adjustments that could be made to improve it, but I think in the future I may as well add video to the Bleeps that I record myself. Why not?

Anyway, video aside, this here is a bit of a Terry Mullan tribute of sorts. He's one of the Djs who got me started back in the mid 90's and he's been not allowed in Toronto for ages now. This month he's finally coming back up and I might actually go out to see just how much has changed. Most of these tracks I've come to think of as Mullan-esque. Because he played them a lot mostly, but a few are just there to fill the gaps.

Tomorrow, Thursday August 16th, 2007 on ILLFM there is another '3d!t Presents...'.

8pm-12a GMT
or if you live closer to me in the Toronto area...
3pm-7pm EST
else, you do the math.

Ed has two guests lined up for tomorrow's show. Ben Pest of Panic Bridge and Jerome Hill of I Love Lucy.

KIEVBASS is a new Podcast run by Valta and Minikin. The first show they've put together features Dj Controlled Weirdness whose name you may recognize from ILLFM and other UK arenas of debauchery.

Show 01 Info & Download

A While back Mike Holmes gave us the audio from Neil Landstrumm's set at his Soundslike gig in Chester. Now we have the video as well.

Download Neil Landstrumm @ Soundlike [video:170megs]

I keep stumbling across this guy's mixes in different spots. Not that that matters a whit. What does matter is that he's a digger. Apparently.

He used some file sharing site that I've never seen before. It actually streams the audio for you. Yay great. If anyone gets the 'download original' link to work let me know and toss me the file so I can host it. Streaming = sucks. Downloading = rocks. In the meantime I'll keep trying for it.

Update: Direct Download link added finally

Here's another of my 'Influences' posts. I realized it had been a long time since my last so I thought it would be a good idea to cook up a new one. Well timed too I might add as I recently acquired a record I've wanted since 1996.

Back in the mid 90's when Toronto had a kickin' rave scene, Terry Mullan used to be one of the city favorites. I could even claim him to be the reason for going to my first party. This record that I've only just (finally!) got in my posession is the Mike Ink Remixes of Marshall Jefferson's definitive house record "Move Your Body". It's the first remix that really defines a moment of my life. Terry is the person responsible for me and my affair with music. He used to used to play this a lot. Definitely one of his signature tracks.

I bought this EP more for the Derrick Carter remix than the original. I have good money that says the A-side will never get any play time out of me. Different strokes for different folks and all that. The DC remix is another example of his great taste. Tracky, yet not boring. Tool-esque, yet not dumbed down.

Some of you may remember the last DC remix I posted. It's still getting played to this day. He's done more than a few things in between, but "Shake It" is the one that I fancy the most.

A while back I posted a whole bunch of Silesian Damage Crew sets. I now have one more to add to the lot. I was actually intending to put this up about week ago. And I forgot. Sorry Imp!

A while back I asked Luke if he'd be interested in doing up a Bleep Radio show. This was his reply. An hour of the tunes he's loved over the years, mixed together for our pleasure.

"...hope you like, it's all tracks I've loved over the years, the mixing is a bit ropey but I'm not Jerome Hill or nuffin!"

Sounds just fine on my end.

I didn't see any info about this release of Paul's anywhere. I had to stumble across it myself on a French website. What's up with that? Don't these guys do promo at all?

Hey "Logo Side"...do some promo!

Mr. Edit didn't tell anyone about this set, but I found it anyway.

Mark Hawkins has put the finishing touches to his first LP's worth of tracks. Reduced to only what is needed with all else abandoned. Finely tuned via numerous live performances and influenced by his European nomadery.

He's joined forces and done several of the tracks with names we all know and love: aLXe, kIRk and Bill Youngman.

The trick now is to get this bad boy out on vinyl/cd. This LP currently does not have a home. I urge you to consider getting in touch with Mark about helping him find the right place for it. Or else it'll be squandered as a mere net-release.

I believe it's better than net-release status and should be physically available.

Spread the word.

I think it's been nearly (or even more...?) eight months since I first heard about this EP. I kept checking for it at my usual spot and didn't ever see hide nor hair of it. Suddenly it magically appears at Juno. I can only assume it'll be at all the rest of the vinyl gateways within the near future.

Side A does it for me the best. And not because of who it is. The B Side by Mem and Drosan is a touch humdrum to me. I've certainly heard better from both of them.

Short and sweet. Free track.

"It really is more of a ditty than a full blown 'track'"

Track. Ditty. Whatever you want to call it, enjoy the listen and then thank Jerome Hill for taking the time to cook it up using a certain Mouth Sounds sample pack that's floating around on Murky.

Now that I'm hooked on Rag & Bone and to a lesser degree this here Warlock fella...

I first discovered Ben when he posted an old rave track mix online. I liked it so incredibly much I had to host it for him so that it could reach more people. After listening to it countless times and never having it grow old on me and then subsequently finding out that Ben also makes some bad-ass tracks of his own I figured it was time to ask him to Bleep.

I guess Jerome was feeling nostalgic last week...

Another month behind us. Good riddance. This July was boring music wise. August is already starting to look pimpin. So all eyes forward!
