Those of you who remember the last bass 'n' bleep set that this guy tossed together will be looking forward for their download to end I'm sure. This one is in similiar vein, but it leans towards Detroit's offerings in that area as all the records are from Network Records. Network Records of course ended up putting out a lot of releases for the Belleville three as well as other D-town natives.

I don't give Justin much love here in the Murky, but I do check him out from time to time. This is a set I found on livesets today, posted and hosted by one of the multitude out there. I grabbed it thinking it's been literally ages (6 months to the age at last estimate) since I last checked out one of his sets and I should hit it up.

it's good enough to share, but to tell the truth it was a borderline share. I now definitely prefer his older work to his newer work. It still retains that certain touch that puts it in the class of things I find I like, but it's kinda out there on the peripheral edges where it seems to be playing with the mainstream a touch more than is healthy.

This little mentioning here is more for one of the tracks it contains then the mix or mixer. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the work Surgeon has done for all of us with his music, but it's not always my cup of tea. The mentioning of the mix is then solely for track 12 in the mix.

Lofi Shizzy is not a track I'm familiar with, but I've never been disappointed by anything that Paul has been involved with.

Now here's a mix to have on hand for New Year's Eve. I've grabbed a lot of this guy's mixes now. Granted he covers a lot of ground and it's not always my thing, but when it is..IT IS.

For those of you that ask for it, here's another thrasher. Plenty of gusto, wham and unf. Two by two followed by some skip to my loo and finished off with an old school stabby thing. Rock on party people.

Also by request: instead of track numbers I'll hopefully be doing the approximate track times. I'll try to start doing the comments again as well, although that one's tougher to do. With Bleep being weekly again I'm running out of time to make the mixes, let alone comment each track. When an eighth day of the week is voted in by the man everything you ask for will follow.

Here's another update to the Subhead archives here. A 2002 set from Quadrat Club in Giessen and part 3 of a 2004 set at Dogma. subhead_at_Tresor.jpg

Once again I'll make the call out for similiar sets. Don't be shy. If you have a Subhead or related set get in touch and I'll add it to the archives. Let's have none of that 'Less is more' nonsense you always hear from the minimal camp. Especially when it comes to the late and great Subhead.

Label head Larry McCormick A.K.A. Exzakt is a busy man. He's created himself a small Electro empire and I for one am thankful.

More bass, more boom.

Back in the early Soulseek days when I first met Oliver he hadn't done much in the way of production yet. I didn't even know it was something he was interested in to tell the truth. But I have listened to everything he's done as it became available. Whether it be the numerous live sets or his track on Miditonal I've enjoyed it all.

It's good to see he's finally got a solo EP under his wings.

I did some looking about, but couldn't really find any information about the party this set was recorded at. I saw the set itself has been posted on dozens of sites and with it being 2 years old that doesn't surprise me. Instead of this post simply being a quick link to a single set of MasCon's I thought I'd take a peek in the archives...

jerome_reggie_larger(1).jpg
"The grandmaster of wonky techno sees in the festive season by recording an exclusive mix for Spannered, chock-full of spazzed-out dance music and questionable humour. The set, recorded in a north London cheese factory in honour of the late, great Leonard Rossiter (we shit you not), is probably now the stupidest radio set on the entire site — an accolade we're sure Jerome will be pleased with."

It's no secret I thoroughly enjoy Jerome's taste in music. It doesn't matter what he's playing I know it'll align with what I like or it'll be something that'll have never been heard by myself before, but love after hearing it. It's been a long while now since a harder Techno set from Jerome has popped up on the web and this one does not break that dry spell. This one does keep your head in the game though and I'm willing to bet a heavier set is forthcoming. So many excellent new releases lately...

Visit Spannered to stream or download the set.

Hot on the heels of Bass Gun 01, indeed, released at the same time is number two. It's another release along the same lines as the first in that it's a track with a handful of remixes done. Sort of old school acid house style --the format, not the tracks!

To be perfectly blunt, honest and tactless I had my doubts about 'Forward Slash' when it first started off.The very second it settles into it's wibble wobble bass line I found myself fully appreciating it though. I believe I've now worn out the heel in my socks due to excessive chair jamming and toe tapping. The grunged up vocal and excellent sense of rhythm keep this puppy going. It could probably even stand to be lengthened past it's four and half minutes and not lose my attention in the least. The other stand out track on this EP is the Full Spectrum remix. It's not so unique in it's substance, but god damn does this guy know how to make a perfectly quality Electro track.

Forward indeed. I'm looking forward to BG3

"Edd Stephens (SmashBack) has previously produced bass-bothering electro and techno hybrids for WIDE records, which recently caught the attention of Dave Clarke who played the track 'Bernard's Ghetto' on his White Noise radio show & charted it at number 11 in his September 2007 chart. 'Forward Slash' sees SmashBack speed things up towards a more Drum & Bass influenced structure, with a variety of remixes that keep the fast pace and bass impact.

Tracks from the Forward Slash E.P have been played on the Alta Ego & ill.fm digital radio stations. DJ support has come from Radioactive Man, Warlock & Glover. Shelley Parker has charted the E.P at number 3 in her December 2007 chart. Mixmag, DJ mag, hyponik.com & the fun-in-the-murky website are confirmed for future reviews.
"

Paul Blackford and Mr. Smashback, two regular guys who happen to make Electro, or UK Bass as it seems to enjoy being called these day. Regardless of what one calls the tunes someone is going to disagree and that'll just not do. It totally does NOT set the mood for a new label.

A new label such as Bass Gun deserves to be approached with a positive attitude.

From the staccato kicks to the 16th and beyond closed hats this crew of six manages to take one track (The original 'Quasar' by Paul Blackford) and turn out 5 different remixes that all hold their own weight and have their own takes on the theme set by Paul. If you --like me-- are a fan of the Aux 88 / Older Detroit Electro style than this EP will satisfy your cravings. Especially since it's been so long since anything of note came from that crew...

I think the track that stands out for me, and it was genuinely hard to decide, is the Mr. Nex remix. Maybe I'm just in one of those relaxed, disco funk kinda of moods. Maybe not. This is my pick.

"Paul Blackford, the first artist to combine rave & electro to form his own style of UK Bass, has gained popularity from his previous work on labels such as Breakin', WIDE & Baselogic. This first release on Bass Gun showcases his tight & minimal but also bass-heavy & dancefloor friendly production style.

The Quasar E.P has gained airplay on the Alta Ego & ill.fm internet radio stations. DJ support has come from Radioactive Man, Warlock, Dexorcist & SmashBack to name a few. Mixmag, DJ mag & hyponik.com are confirmed for future reviews."

For those of you who have been here before...you should know by now the Electro sets are Girlfriend induced. Not that I'm complaining, merely imparting background.

I haven't grabbed too much new stuff since my last Electro outing, but what I have grabbed was tossed into the same heap as a bunch of old stuff that had a similiar feel to it. Listen. Understand.

Steph of Null Records and the Errorism crew has a new live-set out. Expect his usual rather busy sci-fi breaks and Techno beat down.

Download from: Errorism, Fun in the Murky

For the latest outing by Dadableep I wasn't so keen. Not as much as their release on RZ Tracks (Nike Shirts) anyway. However Andomat saves this EP with a remix that doesn't have it's head in the clouds, but stuck firmly on the dance floor. Albeit perhaps a little earlier in the night.

If you enjoyed the Dave Tarrida EP on Sleep Debt then this one should be up your alley as well. Not the same by any means, but it's got a similiar vibe. Somewhat more laid back perhaps. Definitely more laid back then what you know him for.

just tossed online today is the live-set performed by Sugar Experiment Station (Neil Landstrumm & Tobias Schmidt) at the recent (Dec. 8th 2007) Feinwerk Label Night.

Feinwerk, Myspace

Earlier this year, Todd Sines inaugurated Yore with the slamming techno-funk of the .xtrak release Back_Up EP and now returns for round two with "don't stop". Without losing the stripped-down, minimal tech-house funk essence of the .xtrak sound, Sines ups the acid-house ante considerably in the new material. The old-school title cut makes an immediately vivid impression by repeating the insistent vocal hook "don't stop" -both command and mantra- over a towering backbeat. "cut to the chase" does exactly that with funky handclaps and syncopated swing, while the B-side’s low-riding "unreflect" pairs dropouts and bass-crawling boogie. Slightly different in character, the squiggly acid-techno track "quantum mechanics" is as precision-tooled as its title suggests. Despite the subtle shift in stylistic emphasis, don't Stop offers a splendid complement to the earlier release.

What a terrific way to start off a new year. Ditch the resolutions (if they have anything to do with buying less vinyl at least) and pre-order this puppy pronto.

I don't think I need to go over how much I love it when Todd Sines reverts to his .XTrak moniker and material. A quick search here on Fun in the Murky would be more than enough to get the point across again for those who have missed it in the past.

Here's a 2 part set that Norman Müller [Myspace] made available via Myspace for those who were paying attention.

Dj Norman

I've been a big fan of Norman's material since his first Feinwerk release. He's making the same stuff as all the other Tech goons, but he's doing it in his own way. He's definitely got himself a signature sound. I hope he can keep it up and keep it fresh release-wise in the future. It's also great to hear via this DJ set how he personally sees his unique productions fit with other people's music.

After a 3 year hibernation, Ed DMX returns with a brand new release on his own Breakin' Records label. To kick off he pulls out 5 awesome tracks from the DMX Krew vaults in a variety of styles, stretching the boundaries of electronic music in new directions:

'Snow Cub' - playful warm upbeat melodic electronics, chopped up break beats meet analogue synths galore.
'The Storm King' - moody brooding electro dub, kind of Bruce Haack meets acid house in a thunderstorm.
'Funk Cube' - square analogue fun(k) for the electro dancefloor. if Drexciya had written the theme for "Tomorrow's World"…
'Emerging Technology Remix' - souped up remix of a standout track from DMX Krew's first Rephlex release back in 1996. A funky break, techno synths and wildstyle edits.
'Blimp Beats Remix' - chopped up crazy re-edit of the rude quirky electro stomper originally featured on BRK31.

I grabbed this one a little while ago now, not realizing it was even new(ish). If your Electro tastes were formed or are influenced by the Detroit aesthetic then this EP is something you'll dig for sure. The Emerging Technology Remix alone makes this EP worth grabbing.

Emerging Technology played on Bleep Radio 84

This week's show is just another in a long line. A couple records from the new pile, a couple from the shelves and some in-betweeners to connect them all together.

An excellent choice by Mike for the Chan'n'Mikes re-issue series. Although I personally would have gone for the Cannibal Cooking Club Ep. That's for selfish reasons only though (I don't have it!).

Another classic re-issue in this ongoing series, this time it's a head-to-head rave-up with The Spider aka Mark Hawkins, whose discography speaks for itself – with releases on Djax, Neue Heimat, Mosquito, Victim, Input Output Inc and his own label Crime Productions, amongst many others. Meanwhile Mr Forshaw does what he does best…ie hard fucked up electro and techno, this time including the classic ‘Work that body'. Another selection of fine wrongness to play your children when they misbehave…

This EP is all about the A1 track. A big tune that'll find itself right at home in any electro, breaks or heavy ass wonk core set. I'd say at home as well, but that's asking for some downright foolish looks from the neighbours as they spot you through the windows bouncing around.

Monotone is proud to present Monotone compilation one part 1 . This is the first in a 3 part vinyl series taken from the latest Exzakt mix cd “Lust. Love. Electro.” All unreleased and exclusive to this compilation, the series comes out swinging with four solid tracks, as you should expect from top tier electro label Monotone. Hyde of Jackal & Hyde fame comes on strong (with the strength of a hurricane?) on A1 with a massive remake of the 90's hoover anthem Dominator - “I'm the one and only Dominator”! Instant classic! A2 gets deeper with UK electro killer Dexorcist ripping another strong electro outing. On the flip side German electro master Dynamik Bass System drops yet another bomb with Fearless Computer. Known for his collaborations with Keith Tucker amongst others, Max Durante (Plasmek, Electrix) smooths things out a little to top off this first of 3 assaults coming from the Monotone Compilation One series. More essential bass jams from the hard-hitting US label!

North American Shops?

If there are any of you who live in North America (especially Canada) that would like to help out by getting the contact info for you local record shop and sending it over to me. Please feel free to do so. I'll make sure the info gets to the people who can see to it that the vinyl gets across the big pond.

It'd be nice to have it available domestically for a change eh? Let's see if we can make it happen.

Rave Idle Finals!

That's right, this week is the final Rave idle broadcast on ILLFM. Tune in, turn it up and don't forget to vote. I have no idea what the winner gets, but it'll probably be something utterly fantastic.

ILL on Myspace, ILLFM.NET

Iron Oxide continues on its mission to bring good hard techno to the world, this time showing that acid techno doesn't have to mean ‘Stay up forever', London squat parties, or 160bpm! Keeping the tempo down to a very reasonable (but still energetic) level, Andres Andreas (who recently went head-to-head with Hardfloor on their ‘Versus Series 2' release) bring a slightly old-school sounding, but nevertheless effective, hard acid jam. Raw production and tough drum programming (and of course a suitably tweaked 303 line) ensure the correct dancefloor response with this one! Regis meanwhile treads the road less travelled with a remix that incorporates bleeding-edge production techniques with his own uniquely bleak industrial-esque touches to create a whirring and crunching interpretation that will inevitably find a home with many of today's adventurous techno cognoscenti . Sometimes you just have to acknowledge that not all party music is about smiling…this in one for that ‘heads down until the smoke clears' moment…

Hot on the heels of Letroset's stunning opener for Fleeced comes another scorcher, this time from UK bass legend Debasser . Well known for his two Novamute releases, as well as singles on Input Output Inc and Wide , the ‘Quite erotic ep' continues to push his bass explorations into the outer reaches, with four tracks that variously show off his influences from techno, drum'n'bass, hiphop and ghetto-tech styles. Released to coincide with his download-only LP ‘Negating condiment' , available now on Wide Records , this is a beautifully cut and manufactured single that shows just why vinyl still has a place in the hearts of true dance music connaisseurs…

Hot on the heels is correct. I don't even have the first release on this label yet (it's still in the bloody mail!) and the second EP is out. I recall the write-up for Fleeced 01 having some teaser info in it about a few things so I can only assume the Veto boys are going to be pumping them out at first.

Letroset and now Debasser...

The mighty Groove Asylum is seeing the light of day once more. Albeit in a re-issue and not a fresh production. It's still enough to please me considering I didn't start buying Don't [myspace] until release 3. Which was when I discovered it and not when it started getting 'good' (it was always good!).

For those of you who don't know...

Groove Asylum is Rob Stow and Jerome Hill and they'll both still admit it.

The official word:
From 2001, the second release on Don't now gets a deserved repress on limited coloured vinyl. This EP from Groove Asylum (aka Rob Stow & Jerome Hill ), and in particular the B1 track ‘Work that sucka' , received loads of play with its Chicago-influenced jacking beats building to a ferocious bassline and was played by everyone from John Peel (RIP) to DJ Bam Bam ...This is a limited run of just 200 white label copies . The A side ‘Riffin (the remix)' samples a classic Dancemania-style groove and is a relentless 909 workout with vocal samples donated unwittingly by the UK's very own MC Duke while ‘Dirty Jill' is more typical of the Don't sound with squeaks and squeals galore and an off centre " old skool Armani / Johnson " style groove. Be quick!

For anyone in North America that wants this let me know. I'll have 2-3 extra copies.

This show was done up in a similiar way to another recent one. The next day after playing out I tipped the records out of the bag and put them into the same order i played them the previous night. I'd like to be able to actually use the live recording, but seeing as how my iRiver got a fatal bump on it's head I can't record right now.

Data-Trace [myspace] is a Manchester based label created primarily for experiments in techno, breakbeat, electro alongside a plethora of sub-genres.

I would have settled for "Good Music" as being the genre they strive for as it appears it means the same as all that. In my books anyway!

Once again I've got some Quick & Smart [myspace] news to push on you all. Hot on the heels of those two remixes is the CD that was mentioned back when he did the Bleep Radio show. Entitled "Live From His Rehearsal Shack" it's a snapshot of his recent productions, both released and unreleased.

I'll be getting in some extra copies of this one so keep your eyes peeled and your ears tuned for the details on the contest that will follow.

*update*
3 copies are in the mail on their way to me.2 of them will be up for grabs once I devise a clever contest for them!

With a second EP out in a month it's quite obvious [K]rack-troni[k] has ramped up the production schedule. i hope it doesn't slow down here though. I'd like to see a dozen new [K[racks out in the next year!

Sir Real has done something rather awesome with this EP. Now if only someone would play some real Electro like this for the kids calling their house 'Electro' these days.

Another great month tucked under our collective belts. To celebrate v3 is going to be gradually introduced (one page/template at a time)in starting tomorrow. A cleaner look and better layout should make everyone more productive.

Here's the other Quick & Smart remix that I mentioned yesterday and then didn't have time to post up. It's not as off the wall as other remixes and tracks he's done lately, but it's definitely an improvement on the rest of this EP.
