June 2008 Archives

Recorded 03-02-2008 in Chicago at the infamous Smartbar. This Dj Set by Mike Dearborn is a thing of beauty. It's so chock full of the gems that put Detroit and Chicago on the map it virtually qualifies as the only set you need to have.

It's one of the few sets that I know I'll have in rotation for a long while. Just giving a quick skim lands you on such artists and labels as: Maurizio, Daniel Bell, G-Man, Akilah Bryant, Robert Hood, Paul Johnson, George Krantz, Dopplereffekt and Dj Deeon.

From what I can tell 'Velvet' is a Music Man sub-label of sorts and it's being used to once again release older Green Velvet similar to the 4LP and 3LPs released by them almost a decade ago. I'm only mentioning this EP though as all the other tracks on the represses have been repressed already. This one however, contains 'Fake and Phoney' which was previously only available on the 2LP of Flash remixes on Open in the mid 90's!

The man behind countless mixes of new and old acid in it's many forms, moods and faces, has tossed together a rough and tumble for us all.

"Fluctuating levels, low pressings, crackles, it's got the lot, none the less. some serious acid going on. "

Placid

Bonus Round Records keeps the shrapnel flying with its third release "Blister Pack". Unleashing 5 fresh bass tracks designed to inflict critical dancefloor damage at your local rave. As well as two brand new killers from label boss Luke's Anger, Bonus Round welcomes some fresh faces: hellnoise rave pilot Kid 606 (Tigerbeat6/Tigerbass), Inspector Spectre (Truesounds) and Brighton's Ninja Nuns from Outta Bass.

Good ol' Mustard Gunn of Coin Op has put together another EP of old-school inspired 'core for us. And this time in record speed!

Three tracks of solid, big breaks with a little grinder stuck in the middle from Luke's Anger. All it's missing is an acid attack.

This week's Bleep seems to have acquired a slight mid 90's vibe to it. I blame it on the Ferox early on in the mix. That always pushes me in that direction.

After 2 years of silence, lost in the deep, dark void of space, Battle Trax re-emerges with 4 new cuts to devastate your planet! Opening with a remix of the 1990 Dynamix II electro bass classic "Bass generator" , Bassing Guild drop serious boom and add an eerie darkness reminiscent of John Carpenter's "The Thing" for this bass driven vocoder monster. Next up is "Instruments Of Armageddon" , the debut release by Gods Of Technology , which explores the more synth orientated, musical side of Bass Junkie & The Dexorcist . Side B opens up with "Android Spectre" from Motorobot, a moody slice of electro retro future that is a collaboration between Bass Junkie & Dynamik Bass System of Germany . Lastly "Terminate The Bass" , already an electro classic, is given the edit treatment which only enhances this tune as a dancefloor destroyer! END TRANSMISSION!

Bass Junkie's label gets the reboot and the first new EP is chock full of bad-ass electro bass. Kronos Device, Dexorcist and more bring it back to the oldschool again to show us it can still be done well.

I introduce to you...Microtonal, the new sub-label run by the crew who already bring you Miditonal. Which I should add is also available now via multiple download stores. A new sub-label and a new medium. Carsten and crew are spoiling us.

The Abnormal Boyz remix on this ep is pretty bumpin. So while it's a Mentalic EP, let me direct you to that track first.

Al Tourettes has uploaded a number of his live Electro sets. No longer do you have to only enjoy his few tracks out on wax!

This digi-release on If? sits about half way between the glitch, downtempo faction and the late-night dance-floor crew's realms. There's a few remixes from guys like Tobias Schmidt and Jason Leach that regulars to FitM will know of, but there's some stuff on here that should do your head in that you may not recognize. The tracks I liked best were done by people I've never heard of.

Score 1 for new finds!

When I posted the info up for the 2nd EP in this Classic DM series I predicted Deeon's "House-o-matic" on the 3rd EP. I was wrong. Who knew predicting the future was a fool's game?

I tried to make sure and grab each track in this mix from a section of shelf that I haven't picked through in a while. For the first time it actually worked. I always end up cherry picking some of the stuff I play more often, but that didn't happen this time. So aside from the newest 3d!t EP every record is something that's been hiding for a year or two on me. There is definitely some killer stuff I wish I could play more often. Curse only being able to play 20-30 at a time!

This is a 1 hour solo improvisation that Cris did using his NeverEngine interpolating sequencer designs. It was performed at The Bunker in Williamsburg, New York on May 30th.

Nez - June '08

Mista Nez has put together another of his skew-whiff electro mixes for the rest of us electro-uneducated suckers.

Andrez Bergen, better known as Little Nobody, is an expatriate Australian journalist, some-time musician, photographer, DJ, occasional illustrative pencil-pusher, one-time filmmaker, writer, wayward graphic designer, and an ad hoc beer connoisseur, formerly from Melbourne, who's been entrenched in Tokyo, Japan, for almost 7 years now. In most respects (aural and visual), Andrez likes to steal furtive glances in a pseudo-metaphysical rear-vision mirror, greedily brushing up on the "found art" chapter of the Dadaists' handbook; he then plagiarizes heavily from the cut-up techniques of Brion Gysin and Tristan Tzara, nicks the deconstructive tendencies of post-modernism in jaded new ways, and casts a sardonic eye on the industrial music splice 'n' dice ideology of Cabaret Voltaire in the '70s - all the time stimulated by Marcel Duchamp's display of a toilet urinal back in 1917.

You should know from the second you see Steady P or Fugo on a record it's going to be a great disc. Both of them, plus Michele Fasano makes it that much sweeter. The two names I don't know hold their own as well of course. No slouching was going on in the making of this record.

After the excellent success of the debut release MORTAL COILS, we're proud to announce the release of our follow-up EP THE FALL OF LIBERTY.

A hybrid of breakbeat, electro, dubstep and techno, this EP has been doing some serius aural damage over the last few months, with huge support from the likes of Dave Clarke, Mary Ann Hobbs, Radioactive Man, Warlock and Shelley Parker to name but a few.

Repeated listens leads me to believe that more Ardisson remixes are needed. Of anything..!

This was open to all for about 6+ months and I figured it would have gotten much more attention than it did, but don't think I'm complaining. We still have over 100 minutes of DM to enjoy from 8 different people. As things go I guess it worked out alright. People don't always have the time and all that jazz. Maybe, just maybe, I also over-estimated how many people really know about this label now. Is it unknown amongst the people starting off? I hope not.

Because of a new position at work my schedule will be in flux quite a bit for an unknown period of time. I will no longer be steady days and as such Bleep may not air via Live-Sets at 7pm EST, Thursday nights, as it usually does. Today is the first example of this. Instead of canceling the show for a while I'll just wing it as best as I can and when my schedule falls into something predictable I'll make the schedule request with the Live Sets crew. For those of you who simply grab the archive each week this probably will not affect you. I'll try to keep the show on Thursday for continuity reasons, but it may change.

...and the 3rd and final May 10th, 2008 Substance set has been tracked down. Gavin Richardson has kindly passed it on to share; as well as to complete the night's archive.

This is more of a heads up than anything. Deejay is the only site I know of with this in stock so if you want it early you'll be able to grab it from them only. I also can't find label art or audio yet so you'll have to check out the clips at Deejay.

Even the official Ego-Plastix website has no info on it yet...so who knows just how 'pre' this pre is.

"Did this for my own nostalgic enjoyment really [....] It's just a compilation of some of my favourite tunes from this era, concentrating on classic UK hardcore labels. As usual, no beatmixing, and scratchy old records to boot"

There are some solid tunes in these unmixes. I highly recommend giving them a listen. Although do so at your own expense. These old mixes always tend to hit the pocket book down the road. So much music and so little money to by it all!

This one made it to the cart because of the Xpansul remix. He seems to have created a recipe for a unique twist on what is blanketing the market right now. Funnily enough after years of me bitching about the Minimal Techno scene sucking it seems to be finally putting out some stuff I'm enjoying. The last 6 months I think I've bought more of this than anything that could rightly be called 'Hard'.

I do wish the HardTweakedFunkenOddball would pick up again. If you see anything out there don't be shy - pass on the info in case I've missed it!

Here's a wee banger that was sent to me by 'Global Acid' on Myspace...

Ho ho - So the Pest set was recorded!

The only one missing now is Gavin's.....

I wasn't aware a new Rumpus Room EP was in the works, but it's a pleasant surprise. I still can't leave the first two alone. And it looks as if this one will meet the test of time as well.

Repress!

This is one of those fun little records that straddled the Techno and House realms very well when it originally came out almost a decade ago. And yet I never did get my hands on it. Until now.

The Bass Gun gang are really keeping up their release pace. Which is good news for people like myself that can only control their wife via a constant stream of new Electro.

On this particular EP I'm really enjoying the Diplomat and Synapse remixes. The Synapse for the usual reasons...he/she has the same mid 90's Detroit Electro sensibility that I have. The Diplomat on the other hand brings back an 80's boogaloo vibe. It made me remember stuff like Shannon and other roller rink gems. Good work again!

Thorsten, who is behind High Point Low Life recordings (or at least the only I know of that's involved) has a release party coming up soon for a new Funckarma EP. I didn't post the EP here on FITM as it was just a little too spacey for my tastes, but feel free to check it out and decide for your self when it comes out or hit up the release party. This here mix is a very varied take on Dub, Acid and all kinds of Breaks. I really enjoyed it while sitting on the porch and watching people walk by.

The 3rd and I believe final installment in the 1st Monotone Compilation. All 3 of the EPs released in this series have been keepers for sure. The first 2 have been getting a healthy amount of play time here on my end so I can't wait to get this one in my next record order. The Eggfoyoung track in particular is tweaking my nipples something fierce.

When this puppy arrives it just may be time to placate my better half with one of those Electro mixes I have to make her once in a while to keep her happy (and from asking how much is spent on the records ;) ).

I guess this month was heavy on the New Release samples. I don't know for sure, but it tells me there was 22+ Gigs of transfer per day and yet there wasn't that much Dj/Live Set activity. The only thing left that could take up that much transfer bulk is the track samples. There are other ways, but those have never happened before so by virtue of unlikely-ness I declare them ignored!

Maybe I'll take a look around for more substantial statistic software for the server. Right now I have Analog installed, but it's not giving me what I'd like to see.

It's June 1st now. The summer season has arrived. I'd like to add more video to the site so I may be lugging the camcorder out to more local happenings. Not much really goes on here that I'd bother with, but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

It's also getting closer --much closer-- to the month of October. The significance of this is that I'll be in London for my first time. Time-wise while there it'll be a split of about 90/10 between my 10-year-anniversary-time-spent-wth-Sylvia and music related things, but it is somewhere I've always wanted to go to. Even if it were for no reason that'd be reason enough.
