August 2008 Archives

Here's another Sonic Groove EP that wasn't grabbed when it first came out, but with the Ectomorph remix I can't pass up on the copies that have recently popped up in various stores.

Wile definitely not a new release it is one that I don't have and am picking up. The original was always a little too...laid back for my tastes, but this one has Dietrich's roughish 80's warehouse styled mix that has enough dirt for me. The Sims mix can hold it's own as well.

It's a shame, but it's true. Queaver and Versis have made the split. Versis has made the difficult decision of retirement from the grand ol' music biz. Queaver will continue on with what's been started, but now he's going to have to carry his own bags ;)

What I've got here to share with you today is a little more than that small piece of news. Their last live act together was at Sonne Mond Sterne Festival which took place recently. There was some video captured and I've got the youtube links for the two parts of that. There was also an audio recording made which Queaver has seen fit to share with Fun in the Murky's crew of assorted misfits and casual readers/listeners alike.

I'm about 75% in to the audio right now and as usual it's a high energy blast of anxious beats, well timed tweaks of the effect knobs and just a touch of humour. So enjoy their last performance together and while you're doing that I'll see what I can squeeze out of Queaver regarding taste of his new solo career.

Subhead is one of the names responsible for me 'getting into this stuff'. When I first started record shopping, and had nothing in mind for it other than wanting to own some good music, the local record store owner quickly realized my tastes were for the more odd. He threw me a Subvoice record and a Subhead record to go with my already confirmed tastes in Chicago and Detroit. From that point on I was hooked.

It's been several years since Phil and Jason worked together as Subhead, but their legacy lives on and their solo work still shines above most of the rest. Jason will continue to wow us all with the breadth of stuff he can do and I always look forward to each new EP. Phil, unfortunately, passed away almost a year ago. His Dj Sueme material, Dot Com label and the multitude of people who had respect for him will keep it weird on his behalf though.

This episode of Bleep Radio was Mike Holmes' idea. he gave me his segment of it way tooo many months ago to even remember straight. Sorry it took so long to get my arse in gear and finish it off. I hope you all dig what Mike and I put together.

Ok this should be the final Dearborn mix I post. I know there's been a lot of mixes from him here the past few weeks, but I'm pretty sure I've now exhausted the supply. Regarding this mix...All I know is that it's called 'Dj Promo 4' I don't have a date or anything to nail it down, but the tracklisting is a bad ass heavy mid to late 90's one if I ever heard one.

There's a few tracks in this mix I'd love to know. you know the kind, totally familiar yet never stumbled across.

There are some brand new factory whites available of this project 10" that the Possible music gang did a long while back. No more unique artwork on the sleeves I'm afraid, but that shouldn't affect your enjoyment of the music on the wax.

We need more bumpin' bleep like A1 on this EP. I'd probably buy doubles if it had a bit more jack to it. As it stand it's still great though and with the tougher Frankie remix this is a good score!

Another entry in the long list that Derrick Carter has of remixes to jack to. DC has a good ear for the deep bass and bleep, I'd love to hear him tackle something a little grittier and wonky. I bet he'd come up with something really good

The alert readers out there will be all too familiar with my infatuation with Norman's material. For those of you who also love his style, you'll appreciate this release. It's a damn good release, that was heard entirely on Bleep Radio first! Ok, well not the remix, but the two Norman tracks were definitely in there. If you missed that particular Bleep show the first time around I highly recommend snapping it up and then doing the same with this EP.

I've already picked myself up an XL and as usual the print looks sharp. Cynthia does graphics well as you all know.

From Death Thrills to Emergency's, Don't Stop because Here It Comes! Jen Will Tell Ya, if she's not too Sleep Deprived, to Pack Your Ass and come on into Machine City.

When I first saw this EP I figured it'd be the Lory D track I would dig, but lo and behold it's the Alex Cortex. Considering I only enjoy one other Alex Cortex track I figured he had switch up his style a bit. Maybe I'd missed something else great No, no need to worry it was just another chance crossing of tastes.

Both tracks do remind me of early dbx (think silicon ghetto eps) mixed with some drexciya for good measure.

What I understand this to be is a promo (#3) that Mike put out in the mid 90's. It was recorded live in Koln, Germany and is what Mike was known for back then. The stuff that let you know what Techno was without any doubts.

Another Norman mix, this time from Q Club. I don't recall a Part 1 to this, but I'll keep my eyes and ears open for it.

Placid is known for his Acid House mixes, but he does own other stuff!

Another new Coin Op! Another strong EP by some we know and one some of you may not know. Regardless of who or what side you grab this one for it'll be worth it. I'm personally siding with the new 3d!t track as the one that'll be getting played he most here. Who knows what will happen once I get it though.

I was given a heads up by one of the fine folks behind Electronic Madness that they had a Norman set on their server. A good one it is too, lots of stuff that caught my ear in it that I'd never heard before which is a rare, but great experience.

The Input-Output web shop and all around digital empire grows by leaps and bounds. Today the first EP on I-O Digital is out and it's put together by none other than the newly familiar 'Al Tourettes'. Digital only release I'm afraid, so geezers like myself will have to be content listening and not playing out, but at least there's that. All you hipsters who have kept up with the times and play more than vinyl get the best of both worlds.

For those of you who wanted something a little harder....Here you go.

Admittedly I sorta faded out on the end. The last three tracks were the result of me not having stuff picked out in advance and I had to use what was on hand already. I'm pretty sure, because of the mood I'm and the records in the mail, that the next few Bleeps will be ball-busters.

Spewis recently played on illfm's streaming radio show as a make-up show to his earlier set/show that was lost to the aether. You can grab it from the illfm archive or you can get the higher quality version here without the voice overs in it!

Thank Spewis for passing this on for our enjoyment!

Jens Porath is a part of the Monomental crew and one half of Super Magnet, but he does some pretty cool stuff on his own too.

In August 2007 Elektron CEO and co-founder Daniel Hansson passed away in an unfortunate auto accident. It is in large part his creative vision and eye for detail that have made Elektron's products what they are today. The 45 Tribute pays homage to his creative genius and his philanthropic spirit. Artists from the Elektron community have taken their time and energy to contribute to this project freely in his honor.

I didn't hear about this when it happened --apparently-- one year ago. Better late than never I suppose. There are definitely some good tracks in there from the likes of Richard Devine, Neil landstrumm, Milanese, John Tejada, Kero and more. For $5 I don't see how you could go wrong!

I used to be a huge fan of Perlon. Out of the originally 30 releases I probably have about 28 of them. Great stuff. And then something happened. 'Minimal' in it's current incarnation began to form and Perlon took off into territory I wasn't so fond of. It's easily been 25+ releases now I think since I enjoyed something on the label, but this one, concocted by Mr. Voodoo Ray himself may be a signal of a return to form. Or it may be me and my wishful thinking.

I'm not too sure who this is other that what Discogs tells me (Hardcore producer from Finland), but I do know I listened to a bunch of this guy's other stuff after stumbling across this one and didn't find too much else that floated my boat. One record satisfies me for now. I'll learn to cope with him not making everything he does please me (ha ha!).

Bleep 122: Donk Boys

The Donk Boys consists of Martin Abrahamsson and Thomas Jaldemark, both hailing from Sweden. I originally met Martin around the time of their first Donk Boy release via one of the TSR boys who knew him in person -presumably because they lived in Malmo for a period at the same time.

Ever since that chance encounter I've been very thankful to TSR Tomas for telling me about the Donks as I've come to really enjoy their sense of rhythm and the timbrel palette they use. Mostly of course because it's all a 2nd wave rehash of DBX and .Xtrak style bleep and glonk tracks. Only in spirit though, they do have their own angle on things and they do it very well. I know of no one else that can do what they're doing as well as they're doing it. Which I think shows through whenever I write something about a set or release of theirs.

Needless to say I was very elated to find an email from Thomas last week asking me if I wanted to use a freshly recorded live set for Bleep Radio. I hope you enjoy the set/show.

I've really only just gotten the first EP in the 'First Continuous' series. I haven't even had a chance to play it yet I don't think. So with number two coming out I'm bound to start being swamped in records in which I've got no time to listen to. I can live with that sorry state of affairs though!

As normal with Norman and crew, first rate bounce, pop and jerk on this EP.

A while ago I posted a video clip of this very same set, apparently the audio has now surfaced as well.

To bring everyone up to speed, Super Magnet is a duo. A duo consisting of Jens Porath and Oliver Rosemann, both from Germany, and both apart of the Monomental crew.

Here's the first Dbx Live Set I've ever had the pleasure of finding. Another bleep/glonk fan (AVX23) dropped this on the No Future message board and it's definitely worth a grab. I find it doesn't have the same kind of get up and funk that an .XTrak set has (being the only other person you could compare it to really), but it's still worth having.
