I guess if 'Bluster' is on show #4 than it must be relatively new. It's always nice to have a potential new music source so I hope Bluster sticks around and adds some more shows to the pot.

I had hoped to post this puppy up yesterday, but the download took me 13+ hours. With that in mind I've thrown up a Murky Mirror for you all. It should allow you a somewhat faster grab!

As you may be able to tell with but a quick glance, this week's mix had an older theme to it. Like I mentioned last week. moving your vinyl around is wonderful for reminding you of things forgotten about or in some cases bringing to the surface things purchased and then lost before they could be properly given their chance.

Scott Campbell art

Vote 1 Vote

When I was a wee tacker growing up, my dad picked up this second hand tome called Myths and Legends, published by Paul Hamlyn, way back in 1959. The illustrators were the insanely cool Alice and Martin Provensen. As it turns out, Martin was also the originator of the first Tony the Tiger for Kelloggs--this awesome, iconographic '50s tiger that decorates my fave coffee mug these days.

Then, about three years ago, I started writing for a new American magazine called Geek Monthly. A few issues on, they showcased a relatively new artist/illustrator named Scott Campbell, alias Scott C. To me, his images were akin to the Provensens, if they'd been channeled through Blackadder writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton, then stretched to the point of surreal hilarity by Dr. Seuss.

I was busy hacking together a novel at the time, and my patient, super-cool, indulgent publishers, Another Sky Press, asked me if I'd decided yet who I'd like to get to do the cover artwork. That was a cinch; all I had to do was track down and ask Campbell if he'd be interested. After some crap detective work, I did so--and he agreed in an instant, few questions asked, and has turned out a way cool, chilled, funny mate as well.

Tobacco-Stained_Mountain_Goat.jpg

The cover? A suitably debonair, upright goat in a smoking jacket, with a cigarette and a martini. After all the novel, which is still in the sub-editing phase, is called Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat, and has a lot to do with drinking, smoking, and George Sanders.

So, I always wanted to interview Scott in order to find out the buried treasure beneath his easy-going artist facade, and did so this week--beginning by asking him how he got started doing art, remains inspired, and stumbled across his own unique style.

"I think it's a combination of all the comic books and children's books I grew up with," he appraises, "Coupled with all the movies and cartoons I've enjoyed through the years--and the people I experience around me everyday. Right now, I'm most inspired by Charlie Harper, an illustrator big since the '50s. I love his colors and the awesome shapes he finds in things. Same goes for Jon Klassen and the Provensens. Jon is a contemporary illustrator who designed an amazing water conservation commercial, among other thing, and he's also very good with shapes and colors and textures. The Provensons illustrated kids' books in the '50s and have this sensibility. But I also like artists, like Banksy, a whole lot. I saw his pet store he did here in New York last year, and it inspired me more than anything I've seen in a long time. I've never seen anything like it--super clever, and made me very interested in how people participate in shows when they come to see them."

Anyhow, I thought it simpler and less abstract or self-indulgent here to keep the rest of the chat as a Q+A, so read on, McDuff:

What's currently afoot with your art?

"Right now, I have my hands in a lot of things. I make comics regulary for Hickee and Flight, as well as a daily-ish online webcomic called Double Fine Action Comics, available for perusal on doublefine.com. The book collection of those comics is due out any day now. I've been showing in galleries for the past few years, and have a solo show coming up on March 7th in LA at Gallery Nucleus. Called HOME SLICE, it's a show about cutaway houses where people live--houses like pyramids, rockets, and clouds.

RocketHouse_cropped-copy.jpg

"I always love to see underground worlds and buildings cut, so you can see the inner rooms and people doing stuff... much like an ant hill. So you can expect all of my usual dudes and ladies and monsters and cute things, hanging out in their houses. Where do all these guys live? I have wondered this--so I've decided to answer it for myself, and everyone else. Some are quite big. Way bigger than my usual. I'm trying to get large with my work. Trying. There will be some special guests, I hope, as well. Top secret. But don't get too excited. They might not be living guests.

"I've also been doing CD covers and book covers for people like MC Frontalot and have done illustration stuff for Nickelodeon magazine. I just finished an ad campaign that's going around town in Portugal for Show Off Films. And I've been working on a heavy metal hot rod video game called Brutal Legend with Double Fine productions for almost 4 years, to be released in the Fall. Oh, and I'm working on a children's book for Simon and Shuster, about dragons."

Who was your favorite kids' book illustrator way back, when you were learning how to read?

"Dr. Suess was my ultimate favorite. And all the books that I later found out he did not actually do, but had his stamp of approval on, like Go Dog Go! And then a bit later the books by Lane Smith got me really into wanting to make kids' books. They were fun for kids, and humorous in a way that adults could appreciate. I liked how he bridged that gap."

What's your favorite music when indulging in a bit of creativity?

"When I'm painting, I love listening to electronic music. I listen to this show called Future Music on East Village Radio. It's soothing, and massages my head while I paint. But other times I like to listen to dub, rocksteady, and soul music, and still other other times, movie soundtracks and whatever new stuff I hear. Recently I've been listening to MGMT and Digitalism a lot, and I always listen to Daft Punk--oh, and '80s music. Sorry."

Which of your own characters is your favorite?

"I think the character I most like to explore is the Captain from my Double Fine Action Comics. He is a spaceman who is friends with a knight, a strongman, a two-headed baby, and his first mate, Thompson. He's kind of a dick, but also nice in some ways. I like characters like that. I'm exploring what happens when he goes back in time to visit the kid-version of himself. Perhaps it will make him change. Perhaps not."

So which of your characters is the most like Scott Campbell?

"Probably the knight. He's into trying new things out, and wants to make sure everyone is having a good time. He likes activities and getting his bros together. He tried inventing for awhile, but I haven't tried that."

Fortunately for Bleep Ive almost got my 'music area' back into shape. I've changed it's location here at Chez Murky and I think we all have an idea how painful and annoying it is to haul around a huge amount of vinyl and re-organize gear. The last 2-3 months have had me picking from a smaller stack than I'm used to, but now that most of it all is laid out before me once more. There'll be a bit more variety sneaking back into the shows as I continue to gain access again to it all.

This is Techno in the spirit of the original Detroit and European pioneers: machine funk that looks as much to Parliament and James Brown for inspiration as to Richie Hawtin, and which treats each track as a fresh experiment in dancefloor dynamics, not as
reworking of an existing formula.

All I know about this here mix is that I found it on Little Detroit's message board. It seems to be a sort of advertisement for the Subvert night in Sheffield. It also seems to be completely made up of tracks under 2 years old. I don't know if that was done on purpose or was done by someone who has only just started buying this stuff. Either way, a little more variety would have been appreciated.

### "EP01" Snork 17

### is a new project from long time UK techno stalwart Mark Hawkins, who has produced a variety of techno/electronic releases in the past on many different labels, including Djax Up Beats, Mosquito, Neue Heimat, Hoerspielmusik and Snork parent label Feinwerk. First featured on Feinwerk in 2007, ### is Mark's return to his Chicago/Detroit influenced roots, mixed with a new 21st century flavour. Inspired by the desire for deep, hypnotic techno-house grooves as an antidote to both the mindless hard techno, mundane minimal pastiches, and "experimental" for the sake of it music, that is so typical of the current times. ### is stripped back to basics, in both style and execution, with the music being produced mainly on old school drum machines and synths, with track and release titles minimized.

Side A has two original compositions from ###, featuring bleeps, cuts and hidden bass between clouds of wobbly sounds, with a nod and wink to the original Detroit minimal legends, as well as current high flyers like M. Dear and J.T.Cotton.

Side B gives us a deep cut remix by M_nus records boy-wonder Hobo (Joel Boychuk, who is also one half of Tractile). Following on from the excellent "From A to B" that was released on M_nus in December 2008 (M_nus 69), he brings us a great remix of ###´s 04, showcasing his mind-blowing production skills whilst displaying definite old school influences. He was so excited by the original tracks though, that he also made a second remix of ###´s 03, which will be released soon on Snork17r, EP01 remixes.

Today's Bleep Radio mix (148) is a monster. Courtesy of Dj Dro San of Portugal, one of the new additions to the Bleep residency roster. This 2+ hour mix of Techno should be all you'll need to hold you over until at least 2010. This set was actually recorded a short while ago at Dro San's Birthday party. It also marked one of the last, if not the last, occasions where the 'skool yard' club could be used. Perhaps that's why it seems as if he pulled out the big guns for this mix.

I'm not 100% this will be archived as it's my first time really checking out this site, but there is an archive section which you have to be a member of to download from. I used to be fairly split on Jacob London. Right down the hit or miss divide. Recently however, I've been really enjoying the stuff these two guys have been pushing. The Squirrel influenced Eps on .dotbleep and now this rather epic laugh at love, horses, poop and truth.

Cem Oral: Jammin' Master

Vote 3 Votes

If you don't know the brothers Oral, Cem and Can, you should check them out on Discogs. I've nicely enough linked them for you, to save the trouble, so all you have to do is click on their names and voila! Sometimes I'm nice like that. Sometimes. I often lose my niceness in a metaphysical surrealist martini that I keep conjuring up in the coffers of my imagination, but the niceties are there somewhere.

Cem_Oral_guitar.jpg

I first met Cem Oral in 1996 in Sydney, Australia, when he was touring at the same time that we were there to launch the IF? Records compilation, Zeitgeist 2, in that city.

I was already a huge Jammin' Unit and Ultrahigh fan thanks to the Rauschen series of compilations through German label Force Inc.--which our Zeitgeist series was in fact modeled on (shh! Don't tell anyone!)--as well as his yummy album through Rising High, Jammin' Unit Discovers Chemical Dub.

Cem was responsible for terrorizingly funky acid techno and chemical dub (he now calls it "Kraut-teckkno") through Force Inc., Pharma, DJ Ungle Fever, and New York's Sm:)e Communications and Temple Records, under aliases like Jammin' Unit and G104; he also collaborated with Caspar Pound, Ingmar 'Walker' Koch, Roger Kerosene, and brother Can, as Ultrahigh, Electronic Dub, Zulutronic, Free Radicals, Cube 40, Madonna 303--and Air Liquide.

The first night I met Cem, I got quite drunk and stuck an IF? sticker on his shoe; while I wince at that now, quite memorably he laughed out loud, even when he couldn't successfully peel it off. I subsequently interviewed him several times over for the Aussie media, and in '97 he did a remix of Sydney outfit Krang for the third Zeitgeist comp ('Z3') through IF?

More recently, I hacked together a rather dodgy video for him for the update version of his Jammin' Unit track, 'Remote Car Baby' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFKE8vrq4Qk), and he gave us a track for the last IF? compilation, Z-13.1.

Obviously we've stayed in touch since the stickering episode, and I love Cem as much for his sense of humour as his musical talent; he's also one of the best masterers of music I've encountered over the years, up there with François Tétaz, and runs a way cool mastering outfit called Jammin Masters.

"My job is strictly missionary!" he quips.

"As a grandfather of audio engineering in studios, I'm offering my help to make good ideas also sound good. Many artists don't have the knowledge and equipment to make a good recording competitive with expensive, top-ranking productions. Most of the times mastering helps to elevate the quality--sometimes a mix needs a 'remix'. My opinion regarding mastering is that you can use expensive outboard equipment, or plugins (I use both), but it will only sound good if you get the most important ingredient: mojo."

So, curiosity being the thing that may have unleashed the evils of the world (you know, the Pandora riff, and all that), I also quizzed Cem about his current studio set-up for making his own mojo'd tunes.

"My new toy is a Studer C279 mixing console: small, smart, and very good sounding. Besides that, I still work on my MPC and use always my [Rhodes] Chroma Polaris synth. Software-wise, I still always use [Steinberg] Xphraze because--besides it is really cool for surprising sound effects--I've built-in my whole sound library while programming presets for the company that released that thing."

What the man's currently listening to may surprise some people, but perhaps not others. "Whoa. I listen to old country music like Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and such crazy stuff. Eagles of Death Metal is still on my deck. I love to go to concerts in the moment. The last Motörhead show was nice and LOUD. I think because I do electronic music on my own, I need something different when I'm just sitting on the couch. But have a look at this--I love it! But it would be only half of the fun without the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO-YCiGuWX4."

Cem also has a pet theory about a connection between German and Japanese music. "I think the German and the Japanese underground/experimental music scenes have many good things in common. First to say they exist, and also that they have a tradition. An academic one, and one from the street," he espouses.

Talk ensues of Japanese producers like Captain Funk, Toshiyuki Yasuda, Co-Fusion, HIFANA, DJ Warp, Shufflemaster, Merzbow, and Alone Together, and Cem stops me there. "'Bara No Kodoku', by Alone Together, is a burner! I like the experimental and sometimes aggressive attitude in some of the contemporary Japanese music. I raise my hat to the vital, independent music scene in Japan."

Cem also loves robots, one of my enduring fads, and it was this reason--as much as his music--that inspired me to ask the man to remix 'Robota', a Little Nobody track I made last year with Toshiyuki Yasuda (a.k.a. Robo*Brazileira) doing robot-vocoder vocals.

The Jammin' Unit remix of 'Robota' is being carried by the nice people at Hypnotic Room/Elektrax--ironically located in Sydney--and hits Beatport, Juno, and nearly all the other digital download megastores on Feb. 12.

"I like the original version, and have been a fan of robots ever since I saw my first science fiction movie on TV: The Day the Earth Stood Still, in glorious black and white."

Amen to that, and more hogwash religious asides aplenty.

Hanno Hinkelbein Mixes

hanno_hinkelbein.jpgHanno Hinkelbein of Germany has been around the block a few times. If you're an alert regular here at FitM or just happen to already be someone who buys good music then I'm sure you know who he is, or at least the results of his most known collaboration: Aeox.

Hanno as himself doesn't put out too much music, but then what he does release is well worth the wait. His two Eps on his Null Records imprint are top notch releases worth tracking down. In fact his track "New World Order At The New World Border" on the Friendly Fire EP has for several years now, been one of my favorite songs.

Now that you've been introduced to Hanno I hope you'll not hesitate in grabbing these two sets of his that I've found.

Some year and a half ago I posted another mix from this guy. Mark Bailey AKA Markutz seems to enjoy soaking up the diversity that is out there within the various sections at the record shops. he sent me these two mixes of his to get a further taste of what's up his sleeve and I really enjoyed both of them.

Of course that means he's also been invited to put together a Bleep Radio show, a show I hope you all look forward to hear.

Last month I'd complained a wee bit about a lack of New Releases coming out. Well as it always goes with these dry spells, it never lasts too long. We've got one or two new labels popping up on the Murky radar as well as a handful of really solid releases coming from the names which have become familiar around here. Plenty or Birken, Hawkins, Hinkelbein, Anger, Sohns, Pest and more either already posted and due to hit stores within the next few weeks or still in the 'being remixed phase'.

Plenty of Bleep Radio sets made the top downloaded mp3 list again. I'm always stoked to see that. There's never a shortage of sets to download on the Internet. Unfortunately most of them seem to be of the sort I wouldn't force my dog to listen to (even though the little prick whines a lot I wouldn't put him through tiesto). So when Bleep Radio sets score high on the credits here month after month I can safely assume that they're helping to not only push the good music, but it's getting some of you through the work day or evening. I always take a listen to sets sent to me so if you want to send in a mix just get in touch and then have patience. I have a lot to listen to!

in the interest of being completely open, which I am it's looking like next month will be the first time I get to collect on the Google Ads here on Fun in the Murky. The minimum cheque size is $100 USD and I'm sitting at $99.74 as of February 1st. It took quite a while to reach that high, but that $100 cheque that will be sent to me soon will be very appreciated. These servers are cheap for the amount I have access to, but that's not to say it costs me nothing. Thanks for the clicks guys and gals. in the end they do help out!
