September 2009 Archives

It's been 2 weeks shy of 1 year since Sebastian last sent in his first guest mix for Bleep, so it was definitely high time. On par with the last one this is a solid minimal, bleepy, jacker that will sit well in mixed company.

A few weeks back there was a Plex shindig that Max Duley (amongst others) played at. I'd mention the others as well, but as far as I know Max has been the only one to throw up a re-recording of the set he played. Or at least the closest approximation we can hope for.

this is a re-recorded version of a set played at Plex in London in September 2009. I think all the right tracks are in there and the order is pretty close to what I played on the night. It is missing all the skips, jumps and mistakes though.

I haven't had a chance to listen to this mix yet so I don't know if it's something that Neil already has floating around. The download is going very slow though so if I didn't make up my mind quick I'd be leaving for work before I could mention it today.

As usual with RA; an interview plus a direct download.

Ed takes a brief excursion through his limited Italo-Disco experiences and smoothly moves into other realms occupied by Prince and Eddy Grant. The following acid will be appreciated by you all of course. The highlight of the whole show for me fell in the post acid setcion, amidst the ghetto and booty selections; an old Dj Assault track I used to drool over and had totally forgotten about until today. You Can't See Me. It Rules.

I don't think anyone could work up the nerve to complain about this rather eclectic collection of eccentric tracks. Score a point for Andrez on putting this one together. A special tip of the hat goes to him for the Luke's Anger, Donk Boys and Ben Pest inclusion.

I was holding off on posting this mix of Je:5's until I had a listen, but at the rate I'm getting things done this week it could be a long wait. I had to get up 45 minutes earlier for work just so I could do this much.

This song, along with 'When I Hear Music', are the two that Debbie Deb is known for. I'm fairly certain tis particular release is a bootleg of some sort or another as I can find no official information on it or the 'label' it's on.

In traditional Dave Angel fashion this whole EP is good music, but it's only the B-side I've ever really concerned myself with. At various points in the time I've had it it's been played too much, just enough or a bit of both, but never put away for too long. It's one of those songs that you know you can play with really almost anything. It'll sit amidst anything you toss it in and work somehow. Good music indeed.

Russ Gabriel AKA too many other names to even begin to list is the man behind Ferox in many ways. Primarily of which is the output on the label that came from him under those many aliases. This EP is my favorite of the lot. Venus Fly Trap will always have a special place in my crates.

It would seem that what I had grabbed this week, apart from the new stuff, was all from around that golden era of '96-'98. I've always referred to that time span as a sort of Techno boom, but never thought about whether or not others did too. It is a nearly universal thought isn't it?

I always enjoy stumbling across EPs like this one. It's put together by guys that you don't always think of checking for new stuff from on an infrequently productive label. You just have to hope you catch it when it drops, which I think adds to the charm.

Adonis' 'No Way back' is well known by everyone, no matter what little genre pigeon hole they stuff themselves into. Not as well known are The Advent remixes. They still get their share of being played out, but the lack of the vocal means it's just the tease of a familiar bassline.

Here is a Cari Lekebusch worth grabbing. I've always had a deep appreciation of Cari's music, but have found at times that his Dj sets can be ...not my thing. This one however is my thing. It's starting to seem like the ones I prefer the most seem to be mid 90's to 2000 or so.

Does anyone have anything past 2000 they think I should hear?

It's probably been about seven or eight years since I last picked up a Dan Curtin record, but one track on this one caught my ear something fierce. 'Entanglement' has an anxious funk feel to it that reminds me of pitched down Rob Hood / M-Plant or maybe slightly busier .XTrak stuff.

I can't find any other info about the release other than what's below; not even proper audio samples. So you'll have to live with just the Deejay samples this time around.

If you're going to pick up this record for just one of the tracks it's going to be for Rotten. You'll recognize it from recent live sets. It's deadly.

"Following fiercely after the Scorn/Bracket assault of Gravel Bed, COMBAT022 sees a collaboration between techno legends Neil Landstrumm, Tobias Schmidt and the electronic instigator Ebola from Brighton's notorious Wrong Music crew.

All 4 tracks explore the mutant no-man's land between electro, bass-tech, grime, techno, dubstep and glitchy electronics.

Side A sees Landstrumm fusing his beefy, warm analogue dread bass and scorched dubsirens with Ebola's crisp, surgically precise electronica edits, to give a growling mutant half-stepper that's built to smash down buildings and flatten cities. Distant Chris Clark-eque keys flutter in and out of focus, giving a surreal, oddly contemplative perspective to the mass destruction caused. Side B, meanwhile, features 2 tracks from Sugar Experiment Station (Landstrumm and Tobias Schmidt) which run deep and minimal (hate using that word these days) on a electro-bass tip, with pulsing 808 bassdrums, dirty, sour synth riffs and pitched metallic textures. One for the dark rooms and huge speakers!

The soundtrack to cyborgs tearing up a huge warehouse (with extra subs)"

I didn't have enough time, energy or wherewithal to record a new mix this week so I've used the one that I submitted for use in a contest at a local web-site. The contest is over, the mix won and it was aired on a local radio show last week. Now it's time to share it further and what better way than to Bleep it?
